⭐ Wow! Brilliant book. As much as the previous book wasn’t much about Spider’s past and private life, this book draws into Spider past: one of the story arc is about Spider and his former sas mates going after the Taliban who shot him back 10 years ago and nearly killed him. There are a lot of blasts from the past, with Spider reacquainting himself with some of his former friends from sas and military. The book deals with themes of retribution, revenge, and blind pursuit of wealth, and the line between good guys vs bad guys gets very blurry.The main story arc is lots of fun with Spider having to join a team of bodyguards at the service of a very shady Russian oligarch, who is filthy rich and who turns out to be quite an unsavoury character. Yet again as he is threatened by a misterious killer, MI5 sends Spider to help him.There are a lot of pages spent going through the story of some of the “allegedly” bad guys, a la Conan Doyle (ie in some Sherlock’s story, there is a lot of time spent going through the life story of the killers/culprit, and once you learn it all, then you sometimes come to realise that the line between good and evil can be quite blurred).This is certainly one of my favorite of the series: best to have read at least some of the previous book for greater enjoyment as there are a good number of reference to past books.Now lastly to be a little bit nitpicking my main criticisms, which are not diminishing the quality of the book (and there is no such thing as a perfect book anyway): whereas Spider is obviously not Poirot of Sherlock, it seems to me that, should he had used a bit more his little grey cells, he could have possibly figured out the guilty parties (in relation to threats to the oligarch), thus gaining time and avoiding going through this lie detector exercice. Perhaps Spider should brush up a bit his detection skills, or learn from the razor sharp fragrant Ms Button. My other main criticism – again I nitpick – is this: I question the fact that Spider would go after this Taliban fighter after all this time. For me considering all that Spider has been through in the past books, he is fairly clever and can learn from past mistakes:, and certainly when it comes to revenge he already learnt the hard way (eg through helping Ganon getting rid of a IRA killer). Furthermore, he should know – as he has been slapped on the wrist more than once – that his boss Ms Button would know what he was up too. Anyhow, overall a great book, with some vivid character, clever story and build up, and a great finale! Now that I read all the Spider books, what will I do?… perhaps read at some point the short stories…- Note for those familiar with the series: worth to mention that roughly 10 years have passed since the 1st book of the series. In this book Liam – Spider’s son – is now a teenager (.. the dreaded age for all parents… thankfully mine are not yet at this stage..), and is showing some interest in joining the military, which is not to the liking of his dad..- Final note to the attention of SL: I would strongly urge Spider to rethink his fitness training: when you are in your late 30s, running with back full of bricks on your back can’t be good for you! : )

⭐ The new Spider novel is original on two counts.Spider becomes Chief bodyguard to a Russian oligarch,always in HM Service and Spider plans a murder outside HM Service.For the fans of Spider tension is less than usual in the first part of the book but it picks up a bit in the second half and climaxes towards the endThe novel is composed of two stories.One goes as far back as Spider’s SAS Afghanistan days when he got wounded in an ambush and discovers that his shooter lives in London,cool and protected.The other is about protecting a Russian billionaire,London resident and friend of the Government.Long and slightly boring descriptions of the jet set life of luxury of the ultra wealthy Russians and the worries of their bodyguards are interrupted by a couple of assassinations of Russian mega rich to spice it up.The other story, about the Afghani ambusher of Paras and killer of an officer and soldiers,brings up also the life of Special Forces personnel after they leave the Service.As usual Leather demonstrates that the line between good and evil is blurred and that each has to make his own personal decision about it.I am not going to spoil it and go further into the plot which is very good.Suffices to say that the Russian oligarch story revolves around a killer with a grudge from the past and the other story revolves around the planning of the murder of the Afghani ambusher by Spider and his Army days mates.In the novel Leather comments elliptically on the changing face of Britain and the new society emerging,not always to his liking,expressing ,I believe,the opinion of many.Leather is writing this story with his usual descriptive and structural skills and the story is moving smoothly to its conclusion with no surprises before the end.The end is crafted with the usual Leather’s talent.He creates and escalates the tension through surprise and the unexpected and the reader is left with the pleasure of one more well written thriller with realistically sketched characters and all the components of the novel properly slotting together.It is not Leather’s best but it is very good and an easy read.DVK

⭐ I am absolutely astonished that this book is not showered with 5 star reviews!! But it’s early days yet. :-)A previous reviewer has already given a good summary of the book, so I won’t.I can only add that I love the authenticity of Stephen Leather’s books. He obviously does his research very well before writing.This book, once more, was absolutely stunning! It felt like a small death every time I had to shut down my Kindle.I am really running out of adjectives when describing this author’s work. He goes from strength to strength and astounds me every time with his brilliance.EXCELLENT book!! I wish I could give it 10 stars.

⭐ I always look forward to Stephen Leather’s new books especially when Spider Shepherd is having a new adventure. Spider has the knack of being able to be in the right place at the right time. How clever to be wearing a new body vest and jumping out of the water just at the right moment to save a life. It was such a shame that the one he saved wasn’t deserving of Spiders attention. And after saving the day at the house—————jump on a motorbike and rush out to the bush and save another life. If only we could have a “Spider” in the closet to get us out of trouble when it comes near. He helps the good and the bad. It’s just his job.The last chapter has an unusual twist???? Charlotte Button hiring a hit man. I wonder what that is all about???? I hope it is the start of the next Spider adventure. I look forward to reading the next step in the life of Spider Shepherd.

⭐ Tenth in the series, and still maintaining the high quality.There are two stories involved. One is Spider’s official assignment of protecting a very unpleasant Russian oligarch from assassination. The other story is Spider’s private hunt for an Afghan terrorist living in London under an assumed identity. With the goal of obtaining retribution for the death of 3 paratroopers and Spider’s commanding officer/captain in Afghanistan in 2002 (the background story is given in the short story ‘Kill Zone’, although it’s not necessary to have read it beforehand).I can hardly wait for the 11th next year.

⭐ Having read all of Stephens books and especially enjoying his Spider Shepherd novels, this one is different. The main character, Spider is (unintentionally, I think) more puritanical and heavily moralistic than ever. I found this very cloying and treacly righteous when describing Spiders views and ethics. So much so, that it made me cringe at times, thinking that the days of the medieval saints and the miraculous Christian doctrines were yet again on the planet, embodied within Spider! Not so, I sadly think. Spider is not real enough, his ethics are borrowed from Christian gospels making him more like Saint Spider of the Unfired Glock.I wish that his character would develop and grow into a more realistic and worldly person that has all the failings of true human beings. He tries to be too perfect and then suddenly realises that he should shoot someone in cold blood just to avoid the readers believing that he is destined for sainthood.Sorry, Stephen, great story, otherwise excellent plot and characters but this one was let down by the man himself…Spider.

⭐ Great British series — like a story on PBS. Stephen Leather has written for television and is an award-winning author. The plot (plots – usually more than one) seems to be taken from the nightly news. Leather keeps the reader guessing — I find his books a quick read, just because I’m hooked into the story. Try to read the Spider Shepherd series in order —- easy to do with a Kindle. That way you get all the background and information on the main characters.

⭐ Well I am slowly catching up as I just recently found Stephen Leather. Mucho great adventures and I look forward to reading lots more of these action stories !!

⭐ Stephen Leather just gets better and better with his character Spider Shepherd. In True Colours the reader has an insight into the world of the Russian super rich business arenas and some thoughts and ideas or how this class of people may have come into such super wealth. Of course one story line is never enough and true to form Spider has something going on in the background where the Major, Razor and various other ex SAS men are involved.It’s a super read and if you have never read a Spider Shepherd book then don’t start here, start at number one and very soon you will be like all other Leatherholics………..waiting impatiently for the next in the series to hit the book stores.

⭐ Stephen Leather has been consistent with writing books that are action-filled and interesting at the same time. True colors is no exception. I anxiously await each book, and none of them disappoint. Spider is a great character and I keep wondering when and if he’ll get together with Charlie. I’ll keep reading.
