Description
If you think the future is a mystery, think again. With a solid foothold in realism, an extraordinary insight into scientific and technological developments, and a dry sense of humor, Nobel laureate Professor Gerard ‘t Hooft confidently dissects fact from fiction and shows us what our future might really hold. Professor ‘t Hooft takes the reader firmly by the hand and, within the boundaries of solid physics and proven laws of nature, takes us on a ride into the world of the future, which holds remarkable surprises for us all. “Do you dream of intergalaxy space travel, time warps, and mini-mes?” ‘t Hooft asks. “Then please, get yourself some more science fiction books, for fiction it is. But for those who are interested in the real world, let me tell you what we CAN expect for the future.” We meet robots with a sense of irony, ride elevators into space, and build floating cities; let us just say that Playing with Planets, which is translated from the original Dutch edition by Professor ‘t Hooft’s daughter Saskia, supports the old adage that truth is indeed stranger than fiction.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐Summary: What you’ll find here is nothing new, I had heard similar opinions from Ray Kurzweil, and even Michio Kaku (In some of his more lucid interviews); but, Gerard ‘t Hooft explains everything with great detail, explaining his reasoning, and really taking time to explain the nuts and bolts behind why his opinion is what it is. Also, what Hooft does, that Kurzweil and Kaku don’t, is go to great lengths to not meander out into the absurd. Nothing goes too far from reasonable.Pros: the author is very knowledgeable and good at breaking down more complex ideas. His ideas are all backed up by information, and goes to great lengths to justify his statements. There is not a lot of gray area here to get lost in either, no obvious questions that are not addressed (Though some are addressed rather succinctly, but more on that in a moment). Quite a quick read too, was able to finish this in an afternoon.Cons: I was able to finish this in an afternoon, and it costed 12$ on kindle. Maybe a bit too short to justify it’s price. The author can be a bit dismissive of things at times, writing people off rather easily if they don’t fit his view. It’s justified by his outlook, but can be a bit grating.
⭐Any book of my former teacher ‘t Hooft is interesting. This book is a very original document on planets. Worth reading!
⭐Superb Book by physics professor! This book is an excellent read of the author’s outlook on the future technologies and possibilities. I am very glad that he wrote about molecular nanotechnology in this book because molecular electromechanical machines are based on two proven facts that are irrefutable:1 Molecules can form functional machine parts.2 Molecular machines can be programmed to perform useful work. These facts are proven by the laws of biology and chemistry and the fact that we have existence proofs of such things in the form of ribosomes, enzymes, proteins, DNA, RNA, and all of the molecular mechanisms and motors and muscle tissues of biology. He has a great section on self replicating robots, too and also fullerene carbon nanotubes.
⭐I’ll jump onto the “former student” bandwagon, one step removed. I was a student of ‘t Hooft’s adviser and co Nobel winner, Martinis Veltman. It is very unusual to get a book like this written by a man of this caliber. It is short, too short, one would like to see more of this man’s reasoning. Most of his writing is too technical for a casual audience. Too technical for me these days. 😉 Worth the read.
⭐Interesting. Not his best (for me).On time.
