Description

This introduction to the world of statistics draws examples from a broad range of applications, including business, government, medicine, social sciences, biology, and everyday life. The first four chapters present a brief course in exploratory data analysis. The authors place special emphasis on methods for collecting data and offer an elementary treatment of multiple regression. A concluding chapter on the design of comparative experiments links the basic ideas of design to previously discussed methods of analysis. Each chapter and section concludes with review problems. Suitable for undergraduate students, the text requires only one year of high school algebra. This authoritative treatment was co-written by Frederick Mosteller, one of the twentieth century’s preeminent statisticians and the founding chairman of Harvard’s Department of Statistics, and Stephen Fienberg, a leader of statistics departments at the University of Minnesota and Carnegie Mellon University and who is internationally known for innovative statistical research and its application to social science and public policy.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I had your paperback copy of this text since you first published it. Dr. Mosteller is one of the premier teachers and statisticians of our time and I thoroughly enjoyed my reference use of the text book

⭐This is a good introductory book for thos who fear the math of statistics (or just math, period). Nothing beyond Hifh School algebra is required (no calculus). This would be a good starter book for those entering a subject which has a significant statistics requirement, though at an introductory level (e.g., psychology), but without any previous knowledge of statistics. It is perfectly suitable for self-study.My only slight reservation, is that it is largely a cook-book approach (but then it couldn’t be anything else at an introductory level) and sometimes lacks giving understanding of how the formulae arose and why they are important. It is an old recommendation but, for the latter, do look at Facts from Figure by Moroney (out-of-print, regrettably, but available used at Amazon), if you don’t mind dealing with British units, and, at higher conceptual and mathematical level, E-Z Statistics by Downing (don’t be put-off by the title — a very good book).
