⭐This book provides no theoretical material or explanations, only solved problems. So you can’t learn calculus from it. But it is an excellent supplement to a course, giving you lots and lots of practice, and if you ask me, practice is even more important than learning the original concepts. If you just learn a new topic, do a few exercises, and then move on, you will almost certainly run into trouble later (I sure did). This book helps to reinforce and deepen your understanding. The Kindle version has just a few display problems, nothing serious. There are, however, some errors in the book. Some are fairly easy to spot, others not so easy. Some of the problems can be rather annoying. For one problem, you were expected to factor out a quite large polynomial, and that can be really tedious and time consuming. There were a few other cases where I decided that I wouldn’t force myself to go through all of the tedium. Also, in some cases, the “solved” problem isn’t always that clear on just what happened from one step to another. Several algebraic simplifications can happen at once. So it can take some time to understand what was done, and why it was valid. Finally, there are many problems that aren’t normal problems, but rather a form of proof, asking you to derive a formula, given a set of criteria. These can be the hardest of all, but I also think they’re some of the most valuable.I went through nearly all 50+ problems in chapter 8 (on derivatives) and by the time I was finished (which took quite a while), I was much better at tackling new derivatives. My advice is to read through the exercises, one by one, at least once, and then go back and do them on paper yourself. If you get one wrong or get stuck, mark it and move on, then go back and read it again, and keep repeating until you can zip through them all without problems.
⭐I bought this book and several others to help my daughter with her AP calculus. Along those lines, this book is not very useful as the AP examiners have gone off and deviated from the traditional bread and butter calculus topics (volumes of revolution, techniques of integration, related rates, max/min/inflection points, etc.). They have fallen in love with calculating averages, the fundmaental theorem of calculus, and their calculators (see my other reviews). So if your buying this book for that purpose, it won’t really help as this book covers only traditional techniques and topics without the need of a calculator.HOWEVER, for a supplement to traditional class material, this is a great book. I agree with the prior reviewers that this is not a book that will teach you calculus from the start – you need to already know how to take a derivative and integrate, what is meant by a volume of revolution, related rate, and so forth. However, if you want EXCELLENT scores, practice is the key and this book gives you a lot of practice. After a while, you will realize that there are only so many variations on a particular topic that can be tested and they keep coming up over and over again (I orginally took calculus in the 1980’s and ran across the same problems). In summary, if you need to first learn the basics of the material, this book is not for you. If you already know the basics and want practice on the bread and butter topics, this is an excellent way to do so. I doubt that your instructor will give you problems not covered in some fashion in this book.
⭐There are plenty of practice problems to sharpen your skills. Just have a blank sheet of paper handy to shield the solutions from your eyes as they appear directly below the problems.
⭐I loved this book. They almost never gave you a problem that they didn’t give you the components to solve already, and everything build off of the other stuff. Very intuitive and logical progression of teaching you things.Only caveat is the differential equations. It seems like they tried to fit an entire book into this 1 chapter, and they didn’t really explain things very well, just so they could say this book covered differential equations. If you want differential equations, get the actual differential equations book by Schaum’s.
⭐This book, along with the others in the “3000 Solved Problems” series, are wonderful. I needed calculus as a prerequisite for some science courses I wanted to take, although I never took a calculus course. I spent months going through various books, along with MIT’s OCW video series, teaching myself. I had a pretty good foundation of the concepts, but eventually realized that I needed to solved a LOT of problems in order to realize the various applications of those concepts.Calculus, along with other quantitative subjects (chemistry, physics), has relatively few concepts but unlimited applications. This book will very quickly show you many of those applications and improve your problem solving skills. After working with this book for a week or two, I felt that my skills had improved more than with any other book I had used. Shortly thereafter, I took the Calculus CLEP course and scored a near perfect score. I credit that to this book. If you want to do well in calculus, get this book, a large stack of notebook paper, some sharp pencils, and a lot of time. You will succeed.
⭐I don’t know what is happenning but if have an algebraic expression with missing comparator (i.e. =, !=, <, >, etc) you will not know what the exercise is expecting you to find out. That’s a big missing on the kindle version. Go for paper edition.
⭐I picked up a copy because the only review regarding this issue was from 2012, so I had presumed it had been fixed. The chapter on inequalities does not display greater than and less than symbols. Leaving you with great exercises such as “Solve 3 + 2×7”, which is presumably meant to be “Solve 3 + 2x < 7". ⭐This is probably the best way to learn calculus (by doing exercises) and they have detailed solutions. You should probably have a textbook as well, this is just questions and answers, but it covers everything from the smallest steps into calculus and to multi-variable calculus it is what you will find in two semesters of university calculus. This is pretty great and you should buy it. I learn a new strategy all the time from this book, and I am already finished with my exams. This is pretty great and will make it easy to get great grades. ⭐A good book to have as a reference. Quickly dispatched and arrived just in time. Plenty of examples provided in the book. I am using this on a daily basis for my research projects and work. ⭐Great book!
