Description

From its earliest days, the Fortran programming language has been designed with computing efficiency in mind. The latest standard, Fortran 2008, incorporates a host of modern features, including object-orientation, array operations, user-defined types, and provisions for parallel computing. This tutorial guide shows Fortran programmers how to apply these features in twenty-first-century style: modular, concise, object-oriented, and resource-efficient, using multiple processors. It offers practical real-world examples of interfacing to C, memory management, graphics and GUIs, and parallel computing using MPI, OpenMP, and coarrays. The author also analyzes several numerical algorithms and their implementations and illustrates the use of several open source libraries. Full source code for the examples is available on the book’s website.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This is one of my three favorite Fortran books. The other two are “Modern Fortran Explained”, by Michael Metcalf, John Reid, Malcolm Cohen, which gives detailed explanations of the new features in modern Fortran, and “Modern Fortran: Style and Usage”, by Norman Clerman and Walter Spector, which deals with Fortran coding style and best practices. This book augments the other two by talking about specific applications and situations. For example, some of the chapter titles are ‘Array-Valued Functions”, “Mathematical Abstractions”, “Memory Management”, “Interfacing to C: SQLite As an Example”, “Graphics, GUIs and the Internet”, and “Unit Testing”.This is not the first book you want to read if you are learning Fortran. But if you have a solid grasp of the language, this book will help you figure out how to handle some of the special situations you may run into when making practical use of it.

⭐I shall praise this book as a major contribution to Fortran Practice. Certainly a must read for anyone who has to develop in this always renewing programming language: Fortran. The author, despite the deep vision providedon discussions, offers a catching language, sometimes giving the pace of a thriller which brings us to the expectancy of the next scene of the plot (or would it be the next sample program?). The chapter about the problem interface, in which the author presents not only 1 but 7 solutions spaning the diferent standard resources for the problem, for instance, is a superb example of the flexibility offered by Fortran revealed by the experience of the author. On the other hand, many issues, like OOP or coarray features linked to modern programming as used in JAVA or C++, are scrutinised, which leads to an even broder public, despite the book been intended for Fortran programmers. In a nutshell, even purchased, the book put us programmers in debt to this most needed work.

⭐The book is okay. Just gives some modern easy information of Fortran

⭐Good service

⭐I found this useful with tidbits of knowledge!

⭐Excellent reference text.

⭐A person with good grammatical grasp may not be a good poet. And this is true to ALL languages, including programming languages, and this book teaches you to become a good poet. This book assumes you know the rule of the game well (actually very well), and shows you the possibilities of good poems.I can’t stop praising this book. I bought this few week ago, and after living with fortran for almost 10 years now, I am still at awe with the applications shown by this book.Though, being a physicist, I was expecting more physics problem from Arjen(who is a renowned physicist himself),but I must agree, if I leave aside personal preferences, he has done a wonderful job for broader audiences.A **must** have for any fortran practitioner.

⭐Nice illustration of best Fortran practices. Easy to read and understand, while providing a lot of information on how to use advanced Fortran features
