⭐Unfortunately, have not really gotten to use Fortran. But when I needed to learn it, this book was recommended by a person at work who is very familiar with Fortran; it is is go-to reference manual. Advanced if you were a novice programmer, but then, how often does a novice programmer choose Fortran as their first language? For the non-novice, has the right amount of content and detail. Highly recommended.

⭐The book pretends to be the very complete guide to Fortran. It is possible to find almost everything about this programming language here, even the finest circumstances relating to the behaviour of loop indices. However, a few misprints might seem slightly annoying.

⭐My biggest problem with this book is that it reads more like a reference manual than an actual text book. It covers the topics that I’m interested in, but it doesn’t cover them very well.Let me first say that I didn’t read this entire book. I got this book primarily for one reason. I was reading a different book on Fortran, which is well written. However, that book didn’t go into as much detail about coarrays that I would have liked. So I got this book, with the hope that it would fill in the gaps. I did gain a little extra insight by reading through the first portion of the chapter on coarrays. However, my understanding was only made complete by also researching the topic online. Honestly, I found an online pdf file which gave a better description on coarrays than this book. The online pdf had an actual picture, which put everything into perspective. However, this book did a better job showing the actual syntax of the image_index function.If you’re looking for a good book on Fortran 2008, I recommend “Guide to Fortran 2008 Programming”, by Walter S. Brainerd. That book gave me my official introduction to the Fortran programming language, and it did a really good job getting me up-to-speed. If that same author wrote a book on Fortran 2018, I’d get it in a heartbeat.My biggest gripe about this book is that it’s very sparse on actual programming examples; at least in its chapters on coarrays and 2018 coarray enhancements (chapters 17 and 20). It contains lots of ellipsis examples, or examples which use the … ellipsis, rather than actual, short compilable programs.Because this book also covers the Fortran 2018 standard, I figured I’d learn a little more about teams. However, once again, the author doesn’t use actual examples, so nothing is definitively clear to the point of actually seeing the concept at work.My suggestion, to any author who plans on writing a book about any programming language, is to use lots of actual program examples. If you don’t use actual examples, your book will be little more than a programming reference manual, which is what this book feels like, to me.

⭐The book’s title contains ‘Explained’. It doesn’t really explain anything. It doesn’t say why you would want to do this or that, but instead specifies what the syntax is. It would have been more accurate to call it ‘Modern Fortran Specified’.It comes down to what you want. If you’re trying to learn Fortran – and it is a very sweet numerical language – this is a bad choice. It would be a better choice as a reference book. That is what I will be using as.

⭐Non ho messo 5 stelle perché devo dire che sono un po’ deluso dal modo di spiegare. A volte mi è capitato di dover cercare online per capire come fosse davvero la sintassi di un costrutto. Spiegazioni e dettagli forse un po’ troppo persi nel testo, in modo non schematico. Insomma, penso che in certi punti possa essere migliorato. Per ora è l’unico libro che ho sul “modern fortran”, quindi non ho termini di paragoni, ma ho libri di altri linguaggi e sono tutti migliori, a mio avviso, nel come spiegano il linguaggio.Buchinhalt wie erhofft, leider nur auf ipad oder computer lesbar – Kindle paperwhite geht nicht (“kann auf diesem Geraet nicht angezeigt werden”). Scheint inzwischen oefter vorzukommen — sollte so nicht sein, oder wenigstens gekennzeichnet werden.
