Description

Marie McGinn provides a clear, comprehensive, and original interpretation of Wittgenstein’s Tractatus and of its relation to Wittgenstein’s later work. The Tractatus is one of the most famous works of early analytic philosophy, the interpretation of which has always been a matter for controversy and is currently the focus for an important philosophical debate.

⭐This is, in my opinion, a remarkable piece of scholarship. As a student of the history of philosophy, I have struggled (like many experts) to decide how Wittgenstein intended his “Tractatus” to be understood, and have spent countless hours studying the the text and the secondary literature that has grown up around it. Whether or not one is ultimately persuaded to Ms. McGinn’s interpretation, her book, more than any other I’ve read, brings the “Tractatus” into focus.I will caution that this is not a book for beginners, nor even one for those who are more advanced but have spent little time with the secondary literature on the “Tractatus.” McGinn assumes that her reader has some awareness of the distinction between the “traditional” and “resolute” readings of the “Tractatus,” and delves almost immediately into analysis with little hand holding. Those who do not have the requisite background will likely have difficulty following the discussion. This hurdle is (I’m sorry to say) compounded by the fact that the prose is not always as elegant as it might have been. I encountered many sentences that could have been improved with some tender loving care, and am afraid that an intervention may be required to break the author of her constant use of the word “thus.” But such readability issues are common in technical texts, and, again, if one has some familiarity with the material the occasional inelegance of the prose should not detract from one’s enjoyment of a very interesting and insightful commentary. McGinn states her case clearly and compellingly; but in my view it is her framing of the issues rather than her specific conclusions that makes this book an indispensable scholarly achievement. I enjoyed it thoroughly, and applaud the author for her efforts.

⭐This is an excellent book. More purely academic than her introduction to the Philosophical Investigations put out in the Routeledge guidebooks series. At a high level but worth the effort.

⭐Only criticism is that McGinn does not comment on the truth tables and how their connection to the other propositions.

⭐Tks..

⭐L’autrice, con grande chiarezza, guida il lettore nello straordinario mondo di Wittgenstein. Secondo me, è l’interpretazione più convincente del “Tractatus”.Vivamente consigliato
