⭐Writers and historians will find much to love in the correspondence between the perpetually agonizing Flaubert and his older friend and confidante, George Sand. The pair, along with constant writing of novels and plays, wrote each other, offering advice, praise and support. Flaubert’s suggestions for Sand’s work are kind and tactful. He calls her “Master”. The best thing about these letters is the way the correspondents’ personalities are revealed. The rather homely woman who numbered Chopin among her many lovers is shown to be a devoted mother and grandmother, warm and generous to a fault. Flaubert, depressed, compulsive, gloomy, soured on post-revolutionary French politics, reveals an unexpectedly touching devotion and loyalty. Polite, urbane, sometimes tiresome, the letters are worth the effort it takes to read them.
⭐Absolutely wonderful. While it should seem a meeting of equals– one does feel unmistakably that the younger Flaubert quite looks up to & idolizes the older Sand. While there is a certain amount of 19th century ‘floral arrangement’ one always has to pick thru with such period pieces… the candy drops and tarts littered throughout this correspondence of titans more than makes it all the worthwhile.
⭐Dear Master… and it is like that Gustave Flaubert addresses his “Old Troubadour” George Sand. This book is an emotional trip for those who still get goose bumps by “rococo” style of writing. Their minds were not of their time… they were amazing individuals. If you are tired of mundane language and thought… Close your eyes, buy this book and never look back.. you won’t be disappointed.
⭐This book was deeply enjoyable. I have read the works of both writers. Their letters to each other gave me an insight into their creative as well as personal lives. I highly recommend it to people who are accustomed to the best in literate.Martha N. Fried
⭐How close can you get to a life in its own words? Brilliant! And you want seven more words? Duh!
