This fifth, enlarged edition includes marginal notations made by Heidegger in his personal copy of the book and four new appendices—Heidegger’s postpublication notes on the book, his review of Ernst Cassirer’s Philosophy of Symbolic Forms, Heidegger’s response to reviews by rudolf Odebrecht and Cassirer, and an essay “On the History of the Philosophical Chair since 1866.” The work is significant not only for its illuminating assessment of Kant’s thought but also for its elaboration of themes first broached in Being and Time, especially the problem of how Heidegger proposed to enact his destruction of the metaphysical tradition and the role that his reading of Kant would play therein.

⭐After just a few pages, I decided I cannot trust this translation. It’s full of typos and bad or simply wrong translations. I had to find the German original when something just didn’t make sense in English – I tell you, if you can read German, read the original and avoid this translation. Maybe the old translation by Churchill is better, but this is just a waste of money, sadly.

⭐It is primarily and for the most part a readable translation of some very difficult to translate, much less understand and appropriate, esoteric thought. An absolute must read for any would-be Heideggerians, and not a bad place to get some insight into Kant at the same time.

⭐Intended to be part of `Being and Time’, but published separately and after BT. Heidegger’s intention for `Kant and The Problem of Metaphysics’ is straight forward; that is, Rational-Cognitive subjectivity (as presented in Kant’s `Critique of Pure Reason’) is not a tenable basis for metaphysics. Why? Because `time’ alone can provide a foundation for metaphysics; thereby, dispensing with Reason, subjectivity and the rest of Kant’s transcendental machinery. Heidegger claims to have `found Kant out’; that is, earlier editions of Kant’s Critique has time as a much more important notion. Heidegger accuses Kant of recoiling from the primacy of time, and goes on to demonstrate that time is the basis of any possible metaphysics; to be carried out as a fundamental ontology via `Being and Time’.Watch out for Heidegger’s own recoil regarding spatiality and its relation to time.

⭐A masterpiece in its own right.

⭐Immanuel Kant is a giant among philosophers of all breeds. He has had so much written about him, yet it is only Martin Heidegger who has been able to not quite bring him down to earth but give Kant the face he has possibly wanted for nearly 300 years. This book goes some way to completing Heidegger’s magnum opus ‘Being and Time’. A must read, indeed, a must have for any student of Heidegger.

⭐As always, I’m enjoying reading this book (and haven’t finished yet). You will have to have read Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason first, otherwise it will make very little sense. In fact, keep a copy close by for reference. If you like Heidegger and Kant then this book is for you.
