Description
Newly divorced surgeon Dr. Kim Regis is determined to remain a good father to his only son, Selden. On a special night out, Kim takes Seldon to his favorite fast-food restaurant for a feast of burgers and fries. But the good time turns to tragedy: the young boy becomes gravely ill and dies as a result of poisoning by E. coli. bacteria found in the meat. Was Seldon’s death a result of shoddy food-handling practices? Or was it a sophisticated case of product tampering – by a rival fast-foot giant or a disgruntled employee? Or perhaps by someone with a score to settle with Kim? Taking a leave from his surgical practice, Kim devotes his energies to solving the mystery full time. But he immediately hits a brick walls: a code of silence more impenetrable than anything he has ever encountered in his medical career. Instead of a cold-shoulder reception, however, Kim is soon met with a boot and a fist as thugs attempt to quash his inquiry.Aided by his ex-wife, Kim pursues a trail of deadly evidence, uncovering complicity and guilt stretching from the slaughterhouse floor to the corporate boardroom. Racing against time before more are poisoned, the two come face-to-face with the shocking and elusive truth. And in their life-and-death search for answers, they rediscover the reasons they first fell in love. With trademark pulse-pounding flair, Robin Cook delivers a cutting-edge thriller, borrowing from today’s fears and tomorrow’s medical technology.

Amazon.com Review Just when you thought it was safe to eat a hamburger again, Robin Cook–master of medical mysteries, deadly epidemics, and creepy comas–returns with an all too likely villain drawn right from current headlines: the American meat industry. If you’ve ever wondered where the E. coli bacteria comes from, and exactly how it can ravage the human body, destroying everything in its path, this is the book for you. As usual, Cook delivers solid information, well-researched medical arcana, and a scathing indictment of managed health care. His protagonist, Kim Regis, is an all-too-typical ego-driven surgeon, whose arrogance and invulnerability set him up to be brought low by the deadly toxin that takes the life of his young daughter. Sparing no time and barely a paragraph to reflect on his loss, Regis goes right after the culprit, a meat-packing behemoth that brings dead and diseased animals to the slaughterhouse, breaking every health regulation in the book. The scenes set on the killing floor and in the boning rooms will make a vegetarian out of the most confirmed red-meat eater. Toxin is a heart-pounding thriller that hits very close to home. –Jane Adams –This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition. From Library Journal Cook cooks up another medical thriller, with a bunch of E.coli bacteria as villain, an underdone hamburger as murder weapon, and a little boy as victim. His doctor-father soon discovers that something far more sinister than bad hygiene is the cause. ⭐ I was surprised by a few things in this book. First, the “son” who died, as described in the book summary, was a daughter. For a while I was waiting for the son to appear. Second, the protagonist is a total jerk. I never found anything redeeming about him. Third, the usual medical thriller we’ve come to expect from Robin Cook quickly became an expose about the meat industry – something I never wanted to read about. I did finish it, but only because I’ve learned – sometimes to my dismay – to finish what I start. I do not recommend the book unless you want to become a vegetarian. This might help you with that.
⭐ Well thought out plot that has a basis in the current world of medicine. Definitely thought provoking. As a nurse, the potential scares me for humanity.
⭐ This book is heartbreaking, scary and really makes you think about what you feed yourself and your loved ones. Glad I read it.
⭐ I was disappointed in this one. I’ve read Robin Cook before and generally like him. In this particular book, he definitely has a point of view and an agenda he’s pushing. I’m fine with the agenda (hey, no one wants E. coli in their meat), but it made the book awkward and preachy as characters went off on “educational” speeches on a near-constant basis. The doctor character was also a bit much. I buy that a father would be bereaved in the circumstances, but his behavior was just not realistic. Overall, not one of my faves from this author.
⭐ I really thought I knew where this story was going! I got to a portion of the story and I couldn’t put the book down until 2:33 AM. I couldn’t believe it. Dr. Cook did it again. Talk about a page turner, It has food poisoning, hired killers, parents love, tragedy, excitement, and how E. COLI is a monster
⭐ I really tried to finish this book, but I just couldn’t do it. The story line is fine its the characters inter-action that became so unbelievable. If I didn’t know better I would think this was the first attempt at writing, that is how bad the characters are in this novel. Too bad as the storyline itself was actually pretty good but the flat characters and stilted writing style killed it for me.
⭐ This is the first Robin Cook book I have read since Coma which was many years ago. I also enjoyed that one as well. I found that the plot in Toxin was fast paced, the character development was excellent, and allowed me to consider the food industry a bit! I would recommend it to those that like medical suspense plots.
⭐ How could it just end like that? Just when it was finally getting somewhere good, it just ended! Could have gone without a lot of the drs tantrums, but would have like more than what I got in the ending.
⭐ Another good book by Robin Cook. Didn’t want to put it down until I read the last page. It is so disgusting the way he described what goes on at meat packing plants. There is so many ways that the meat can get contaminated along the kill floor and the finished product. You might want to read this book before you make fun of vegetarians.
⭐ I thought it was a pretty good book and then it just ended. Many storylines were left side open. It felt like the author had a deadline so just stopped writing.Normally, his books are good all the way through, so this one was disappointing.
