Description

It should have been a routine childbirth. But somehow, the mother died in the delivery, the baby was born brain-damaged, and Jeffrey Rhodes, the anesthesiologist, is running for his life. Charged with malpractice, he is found guilty of harmful intent and reckless disregard for human life. To clear his name, Rhodes must follow a fugitive trail into the heart of medical nightmare. A trail that, for some, may end in suicide–and for others, in the most shocking conspiracy of our time…

User’s Reviews

From Publishers Weekly When a mother and her newborn infant die from the anesthetic he has administered, Boston anesthesiologist Dr. Jeffrey Rhodes’s life turns into a shambles. Within months he has been financially destroyed in a malpractice suit and convicted of second-degree murder, with a prison term likely. Panicked, he flees and, in desperation, turns to Kelly Everson, the widow of an old friend who committed suicide following a similar tragedy. They discover that both incidents–and others as well–may not have been cases of physician error but rather deliberate murders. The villain, known to the reader early on, is finally uncovered by the duo, whose efforts are complicated by the unrelenting pursuit of Rhodes by a bounty hunter who has been hired by the bail bondsman who stands to lose a small fortune if the convict is not returned to custody. Through two-thirds of its length, this is a fast-paced, albeit improbable, story of the havoc that can be wreaked by a lone madman. Then a sudden twist brings in a new set of villains and reveals an evil conspiracy that snaps belief. Cook, whose medical thrillers invariably land on the bestseller lists, may be asking more credulity than many readers are willing, or able, to provide this time out. Literary Guild alternate. Reviews from Amazon users, collected at the time the book is getting published on UniedVRG. It can be related to shiping or paper quality instead of the book content:

⭐ It is quite interesting and will keep you engaged start to finish. I would definitely recommended this for anyone who is a fan of the medical mystery genre

⭐ I hate having to go through so much trouble to exit this book and move on. And to make matters worse I have to give you amount of words in the review to move on to another book.A review should be voluntary.

⭐ Iiked that it was the old Cook that attracted me to him in the first place but one I had not read, full of medical terms, some I had to look up, and diabolical plots. I, of course did not like the outdated communication, no smart phones yet – not Dr. Cook’s fault.

⭐ Hosptals are known incubaters of all sorts of germs the can cause serious illness or worse, death. These threats are generally thwarted successfully by the professionals on staff at the hospitals, but what the threat was a two legged, human germ, a cunning killer in the operating room. Robin Cook takes you on an exciting adventure that will keep you on the edge of your seats.George Ziff

⭐ I’m a fan of RC and this is the first disappointment I’ve experienced. For me, a good book has a have a likeable protagonist and Jeffry was not only unlikeable, he was disgustingly indecisive, moronic in his decision making and rather than acting like an educated 40 year-old dr, he ran around like a 16 year-old with no clue as to what is going on. I’m half way thru the book and just can’t take the frustration with this idiot any more and will go on to a different RC. I am still a fan.

⭐ One of my favorite Robin Cook books! I had stopped reading for a while (too busy) and picked this book up….it was SOOOO hard to put down! It was soooo good and had me searching for my next Robin Cook book. This is by far one of his best.

⭐ I’ve read a lot of Robin Cook books & will continue to do so. Harmful Intent was another hit for me. Jeffrey had me guessing & I wasn’t always correct. I like his style of writing but it also scares me as his books are in medical places & it could come true, hopefully not with me or you. Bet you won’t figure out the ending. Keep up the great writing Robin.

⭐ Pretty typical Cook book…easy to read a little predictable but still enjoyable! Definitely worth taking the time and reading, actually a page turner.

⭐ A truely exquisite approach to the complicated process of nature “SURVIVAL OF THE SPECIES”. The joy, hope and pain of carrying a child is never known to 50% of the population of the World, i.e. males never experience “pregnancy”. The book clearly sketches the details making everybody feel it.

⭐ Robin Cook has done it again with another medical mystery that keeps the pages turning. His incorporation of medical science, combined with mystery thrillers makes for a “can’t put it down” read!
