Description

Based on practical work with mathematical physics done in the Physics Department of Moscow State University, this outstanding text by three of the Faculty’s distinguished members focuses on a wide range of problems. Chapters are divided according to the method of solution — thereby giving students the opportunity, through independent work, to gain elementary problem-solving skills where mathematical physics equations are concerned. In addition, there is a supplement devoted to the special coordinate systems of mathematical physics, together with a section devoted to special functions.Designed not only for students but for engineers and research workers, this volume includes an exceptionally useful selection of problems, a number of which are accompanied by detailed instructions and solutions.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This is a book containing several hundred problems for students with a serious interest in partial differential equations and special functions. Although, the book’s title contains the phrase `mathematical physics’, it is a book for everyone: mathematicians, physicists, and engineers. More precisely: everyone who uses partial differential equations (boundary value problems) in his/her field. The book can be especially helpful for instructors of Boundary Value Problems or Mathematical Methods for Engineers and Scientists as a source of problems for creating assignments or presenting examples during the lectures. However, the book is not for those who expect to find extensive solutions. Solutions are included but they follow mostly the style of L.D. Landau (meaning that are extremely compact, the majority of the details are omitted, often to the point that the solution is shrunk down to the final answer!) So if you are a student looking a book to guide you through the steps of the solutions, this book is not for you. In this case, I recommend as first reading the book

⭐.Here is something that upset me when I saw it: The translator (see page x) tells us that, during translation, he omitted the problems related to the method of images and the use of special functions since they were not interesting! Unfortunately, I take issue with this statement. Talk with any physicist and he/she will tell you that the method of images is a very powerful one for solving problems. One encounters it in many areas, including electrodynamics and quantum mechanics. As for for the use of special functions, do I need to comment? Isn’t the title `A collection of problems in mathematical physics’ and hence one expects to see them used there? Finally: Since this is not a book to study the theory, I would like to suggest as companion the following book by N.N. Lebedev which, I think, is a really good one:

⭐. There is considerable overlapping and a combined study will prove very beneficial.

⭐This book presents a comprehensive set of problems involving all types (linear hyperbolic, parabolic and elliptic) of partial differential equations that is the companion book to the book “Equation of Mathematical Physics” by A,N. Tikhonov and A.A. Samarskii. These two books form a set that is very well suited for self study.
