About the Author Mary Louise Gill is Professor of Philosophy and Classics at Brown University. She is the author of Aristotle on Substance: The Paradox of Unity (1989), Unity, Identity, and Explanation in Aristotle’s Metaphysics (co-edited with Theodore Scaltsas and David Charles, 1994), Self-Motion: From Aristotle to Newton (co-edited with James G. Lennox, 1994), and Plato: Parmenides (with Paul Ryan, 1996). Pierre Pellegrin is Director of Research at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique in Paris. ⭐In an enterprise of this type, the key is the discernment of the editors who selected contributions from the 35 fine scholars whose work is represented in this volume. Mary Louise Gill and Pierre Pellegrin have performed a signal service to all students interested in the period covered. The time frame runs from the worldview of Homer and Hesiod in Archaic Greece down to the collapse of the Western Roman Empire in the 7th Century AD. Luckily, they were not afflicted by false modesty and included some of their own work as well. This book will repay inspection over and over again.
