Considered a classic by many, A First Course in Abstract Algebra is an in-depth introduction to abstract algebra. Focused on groups, rings and fields, this text gives students a firm foundation for more specialized work by emphasizing an understanding of the nature of algebraic structures.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐My undergrad Abstract Algebra I & II classes used this book (or rather the 6th edition which Amazon is no longer carrying). I think it’s a very good book with a sufficient number of examples and detailed explanations. The reviewer who stated that this is not a book for mathematicians is correct; this is a book for undergrad students taking their first course in theoretical mathematics. The title of the book, “A FIRST Cource in Abstract Algebra”, assumes this which is why proofs and explanations are often incorporated together. I think that most students would appreciate the lengthly explanations and lack of overly technical proofs. Having a good professor to go along with this book, however, is what sold it to me.

⭐I bought this book as a requirement for a Algebra class I’m taking. I didn’t have any background in this type of math but the book does a better than average job of explaining the material and making it interesting. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants start learning about abstract algebra.

⭐it was exactly what I ordered

⭐The pages are all in decent shape, and theres only an occasional pencil marking circling a header every page or so.The spine on this hardcover is not very stiff. Hopefully it doesnt any problems in the future, but I would recommend getting (“Used Good” or better because “Used Acceptable” is not that great. Also, this is a jab at Amazon I think, because it was ‘Shipped by Amazon’, but it came with a plastic backed sticker advertising amazon book rentals (this is a Buy order, not a rent). It came off cleanly and doesnt leave any tangible residue, but its 30 seconds I’d rather not have spent peeling a sticker.

⭐More details cud help

⭐It is a version sold in India . The book is good and the exercise is the same as the US version.

⭐It’s the only complaint I have, but in a math textbook like this the index is no minor issue, it’s an invaluable tool to navigate a volume thick with theorems, definitions and so on. It’s nice that they have a table of symbols at the back, but some of these appear to mis-cite page numbers. The index itself is the skimpiest I’ve ever seen in a text of such complexity, thrown together as though it were an afterthought. This really frustrated me on a number of occasions when I was trying to follow some particular chain of reasoning backwards through the book.

⭐What came was the international version of this textbook. It’s in great condition and is plenty readible. However, the index for the international version of this book is HORRIBLE. Which is absurd considering the non-international version’s index is plenty detailed. You’ll have to print the non- international version’s index of this book If you ever want to be able to find things in the international version.

⭐I am talking about the kindle edition. The first few pages are rubbish. You can’t read them. All mathematical formulae have turned into incomprehensible series of symbols ! The rest are simply photos of the original ones. So not any kindle facility is available on them.

⭐Bought this for my kindle, but the pages do not display correctly or resize with font size. It looks as if the pages have been photocopied and scanned… very disappointed. The text is therefore far too small to read on a kindle and the kindle book is therefore unreadable

⭐Although book is absolutely Intresting, go for this book without asking anyone. But fault is from publisher, In this new print chapters topological groups have been deleted, there is no content index which makes difficult to find topics and there is no answer to odd problems in this print. Also don’t buy the one published by Narosa, that one is third edition which isn’t updated to general linear groups and other topics

⭐The formatting is all wrong ! So far after just a few It is obvious that the formatting is all wrong , this is specially annoying for the math symbols . One can not even read a definition. Do not buy .

⭐Contains bunch of problems which may help the NET-JRF, GATE aspirants. Buy it without any delay. But at the same time follow Gallian and Dummit, Foote.
