    Description

This book explains recent results in the theory of moving frames that concern the symbolic manipulation of invariants of Lie group actions. In particular, theorems concerning the calculation of generators of algebras of differential invariants, and the relations they satisfy, are discussed in detail. The author demonstrates how new ideas lead to significant progress in two main applications: the solution of invariant ordinary differential equations and the structure of Euler-Lagrange equations and conservation laws of variational problems. The expository language used here is primarily that of undergraduate calculus rather than differential geometry, making the topic more accessible to a student audience. More sophisticated ideas from differential topology and Lie theory are explained from scratch using illustrative examples and exercises. This book is ideal for graduate students and researchers working in differential equations, symbolic computation, applications of Lie groups and, to a lesser extent, differential geometry.

⭐A very well written and thoroughly practical teaching book; equally a better working introduction to Lie group theory than many books thus titled. Thorough explanations with plenty of examples, including worked cases, to make clear unambiguous reading despite the subtlety of some of the concepts. Clearly the book has been properly tested on real students; all too rare in my experience of advanced texts even by senior authors.Because of the breadth of the goals in both group theory and variational calculus in a book of necessarily limited length, many results are not proven, but the content is well judged to give an adequate earthing of results in the topics that would ease the study of more theoretical references or progress into the deeper topics. To some extent the modest title belies this value of the book.If I have a concern it is with the term “the invariant calculus”. There are now innumerable books on topics of invariance, but their diversity is such that there is a lack of a really accessible unifying introduction to this vast topic. This broader aim is not that of the present book but a very specific (and important) modern methodology, and the potential reader should bear this in mind.

⭐LIKE SO MANY ADVANCED MATHEMATICAL TEXTBOOKS THEY DO A GOOD JOB FOR THE “EXPERT”. IT IS LIKELY THAT I SHALL OFTEN TURN TO THE BOOK IN THE FUTURE IN ORDER TO TRIGGER MY MEMORY.
