Description
How has the universe evolved? Astronomer and physicist Joseph Silk explores this and other questions of cosmology in this updated, paperback edition of his acclaimed A Short History of the Universe. Silk shows how cosmologists study cosmic relics and construct theories of the universe’s inception, its evolution, and its plausible future. He describes how physicists apply their theories of subatomic particles to re-create the first moments of the big bang and how astronomers map huge reaches of the universe to understand the later creation of galaxies and clusters of galaxies. He also reports on one of science’s most dramatic detective stories: the search for the missing matter that will determine the ultimate fate of the universe.
User’s Reviews
Editorial Reviews: Amazon.com Review Most cosmology books are woefully lacking in illustrations, which is odd considering how our information about the universe is visual. Not so A Short History of the Universe, which continues Scientific American Library’s policy of providing clear, authoritative, beautifully illustrated surveys of important topics. Joseph Silk is one of the most influential cosmologists, and he leads us on a tour of the universe with enough pictures, graphs, and equations that we can actually get an idea of what astrophysicists think is going on. Nature calls this book “the best introduction to cosmology for the general public.” From Scientific American Cosmologist Joseph Silk sums up the evidence and shows how physicists are able to leap from the infinitesimal to the vast in A Short History of the Universe. From The New Yorker …a worthy preface to the momentous discoveries undoubtedly coming in the next decade. Review Did the universe begin with a big bang? Will it end in a big crunch or a big chill? These are some of the questions that astronomer and physicist Joseph Silk explores in this updated, paperback edition of his acclaimed crystallization of cosmology, A Short History of the Universe. This edition features the latest views on such intriguing topics as the future of the universe, dark matter, and the formation of galaxies. In A Short History of the Universe, Silk depicts cosmologists as archaeologists who study cosmic relics and construct theories of the universe’s inception, its evolution, and its future. Silk describes how physicists apply their theories of subatomic particles to re-create the first moments of the big bang and how astronomers map huge reaches of the universe to understand the later creation of galaxies and clusters of galaxies. He also reports on one of science’s most dramatic detective stories: the search for the missing matter that will determine the ultimate fate of the universe. 182 illustrations — Book DescriptionSilk is an expert in the field and describes both the triumphs and the controversies of modern astrophysical research with clarity and eloquence. Strongly recommended. — Choice, June 1995[T]his lovely volume delivers just what its title promises. Of the many books currently available on cosmology, this is the one I would choose to hook the neophyte or delight the aficionado. — Boston Book Review, December 1995 About the Author Joseph Silk is a professor of astronomy and physics at the University of California at Berkeley. He earned his doctoral degree in astronomy from Harvard University. He is the author of several books, including The Big Bang, and coauthor of The Left Hand of Creation. Read more

⭐faster delivery.. well packed. The book was received in a very good new like condition… I enjoy reading this book… I have not completed reading this book but I give a five star as it was a good experience to purchase from this seller… Will update about the contents and quality of the different chapters in the book very soon….
⭐THIS IS AN EXCELLENT BOOK. IT’S CONCISE AND INFORMATIVE. SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN IS HAS A GOOD BOOK HERE. IT’S WELL WORTH IT.
⭐While this book is somewhat dated (1995), it does give an excellent survey of cosmology and astrophysics up to that date. A lot has happened since then, but seeing as how Scientific American decided to quit on this great series of books, I don’t imagine that there will be an update from the, but Joseph Silk has published numerous scholarly works and two popular books that update the topics covered in this book (The Infinite Cosmos, Oxford University Press, 2006, ISBN 978-0-19-953361-9 and On the Shores of the Unknown: A Short History of the Universe, Cambridge University Press, 2005, ISBN 0-521-83627-1)
⭐The science of cosmology gives a quantitative foundation to our views about the universe. A Short History of the Universe explains in layman’s terms and with excellent pictures how our theories of the structure of the universe have evolved, thus feeding the areas of philosophy and religion. What do we mean if we say that the universe has limits, but is also infinite? Why is it that the sun is considered to be halfway through its lifetime? How can the universe be expanding in every direction that we look when the earth is not at the center of the universe? These sorts of questions are answered–and answered well. If you have curiosity about how the heavens are studied, this book is definitely worth your time.
⭐Obviously seller is a book lover like me because it was exactly as described – new without any scratches or marks and nicely packaged in a box – yes believe it or not an actual box! Easy opening of the package as well. I would definitely pay more for a book from this seller based on this initial purchase. Well done – thank you!
⭐Ce livre qui se lit comme un roman, aborde les questions complexes de la naissance de l’univers avec une grande rigueur tout en se mettant à la portée d’un lecteur non spécialiste. Magnifique.
