⭐Am not half-way through with this book, but I am learning so many things I always meant to get to.
⭐Reading these original papers is like time traveling to the laboratories of the past. Listen in as Copernicus talks aloud about how naked-eye observations of Venus make an earth-centric universe almost ridiculous. Chuckle as he comes to the conclusion that everything, even the stars, orbit the sun. Nod knowingly as he does some geometry and concludes that interplanetary distances are really quite large and filled with nothing but “air and ether”. Ha! How could he know any differently? The fascinating thing about this book is the process of science. In hindsight we know the conclusions these scientists reach, but how they get there using then-current knowledge and novel experiments is the story of science and how to be a scientist. Unlike the bland presentation of formulas in a standard physics textbook this book explores the scientific method of asking and answering questions about the world around us.That being said, not all of this book is interesting reading and not all of this book is easy reading. There will be parts you’ll want to skim due to the tediousness of the subject matter — Ptolemy’s in-depth description of how to build an Astrolabe comes to mind. The time you save skimming can be used on the difficult sections. A slow and contemplative pace is appropriate for the readings from Einstein’s “Relativity”.Dr. Kuehn does a great job of introducing each reading and great scientist and laying out the historical significance of their work. Most of the readings are followed by study questions, exercises, vocabulary words, and, sometimes, laboratory experiments that can be done by the reader. I found it worth reading the study questions before the reading — as a preview of what questions the author was trying to answer. I also found myself wishing for an answer guide for the exercises. I would have attempted more of them if I could have determined if I was doing them correctly.Having the great works of astronomy collected in a single volume is already a valuable resource but with Dr. Kuehn’s interesting and informative introductions and study guides I give this book five stars.
