    Description

Turbulence is widely recognized as one of the outstanding problems of the physical sciences, but it still remains only partially understood despite having attracted the sustained efforts of many leading scientists for well over a century. In A Voyage Through Turbulence we are transported through a crucial period of the history of the subject via biographies of twelve of its great personalities, starting with Osborne Reynolds and his pioneering work of the 1880s. This book will provide absorbing reading for every scientist, mathematician and engineer interested in the history and culture of turbulence, as background to the intense challenges that this universal phenomenon still presents.

    User’s Reviews

Editorial Reviews: Review “I highly recommend A Voyage Through Turbulence to all scientists, engineers, historians and philosophers of science, students, and to even the broader readership of anyone who is interested in the onset and nurturing of creative thoughts. Turbulence connoisseurs will savor devouring the book, but even the non-specialists will still get something utilitarian out of it.” Mohamed Gad-el-Hak, AIAA Journal”I greatly enjoyed reading this book. It succeeds admirably in combining introductions to the original ideas and observations of celebrated 20th century scientists together with their biographies, some written by authors who knew their subjects personally.” Jonathan Healey, Mathematical Reviews Book Description Biographies of twelve of the leading personalities in turbulence research chart the development of the subject from Reynolds onward. ⭐Great historical accounts of the work of the pioneers in turbulence written by todays leaders in the field. Nice insight into the personalities of people like Richardson, Kraichnan etc.

⭐I purchased “A Voyage Through Turbulence” because (i) I work with turbulence research professionally and (ii) I find accounts on the history of science quite exciting. That Philip Saffman is included in the final chapter was an additional reason; one of my PhD supervisors was Mark Saffman, a son of Philip Saffman.Apart from the historical contents which is interesting in its own right, the book gives an excellent introduction to concepts used in modern turbulence research. It is an excellent – extended – primer. Further, the references provided can be used to delve deeper into the subject matter. Several ideas were new to me and led me to seek out supporting information from other sources. One drawback of the book is of course that since the chapters are written by different authors, the style and emphasis differs. Personally I prefer chapters where personal interactions and more biographic information is included. In conclusion, I can wholeheartedly recommend this book, both as a introduction for students entering the turbulence field and for more experienced scholars wishing to place turbulence in a historical context.

⭐Book is made up of section written by different authors. Book exemplifies how dominant Cambridge University Engineering Department have been in the arguably the most important problem in classical mechanics. Davidson is a superb academic, written some great papers, he is a great speaker, (sets relatively easy exam papers) but he is an outstanding writer.Very easy to read – no real understanding of turbulence required, its basically the story behind the people behind the story of turbulence. Definitely the easiest book to read on the topic of turbulence!!!! Its a shame that you will never get “coffee table” popular science books about fluids topics such as turbulence, but this book makes a pretty good stab of just telling an interesting story linked to the subject.

    ⭐Excellent book
