Description
This volume collects all the texts from Franz Kafka’s literary remains that originated in the period up until Autumn 1917, with the exception of the two novels The Man Who Disappeared (Kafka’s original title for Amerika) and The Trial, plus the material that passed into the published Diaries. These texts “ short story drafts, aphorisms, dreams, dialogues, and other shards of recorded imagination “ are presented here in strict adherence to Kafka’s handwritten drafts “ not only in the original form of the text, but also in their raw, handwritten arrangements. Each piece is preserved in its original context, including the various different first attempts that indicate the way towards a work in progress. Whatever stands together in Kafka’s handwritten drafts, remains together in this edition. These ABANDONED FRAGMENTS are presented together in English for the very first time, providing a unique resource which will prove indispensable to Kafka scholars, and essential for the general reader of classic literature.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐It is with sadness that I reflect on this book…for the last tracings of this author preclude anaylsis. What is true of this book is true of every master: from the smallest traces by a master hand, one can learn. Certain passages make the reader gasp as they are so spare, yet so inciteful. The fragility casued by the author’s illness is reflected on every page. Reading this book is like finding a lost sketch by Klimpt, one perhaps tattered, tossed away in exasperation by the painter who considered it not up to his own standards. But as a modern reader, one can still find merit in every line, in every meandering, in every repetition of a paragraph.Leave it on your bedtable, pick it up as you would the diary of any great writer. Open it at random and be astonished at how few words go so far into your mind and heart. Every page has value. We get the word ‘thumbnail sketch’ from William Hogarth who sketched on his thumbnail when he ran out of paper.Kafka sketched on paper and he ran out of time, or so he might have thought.Nvertheless, his work turns out to be timeless.
