Abstract Algebra: Theory and Applications is an open-source textbook that is designed to teach the principles and theory of abstract algebra to college juniors and seniors in a rigorous manner. Its strengths include a wide range of exercises, both computational and theoretical, plus many non-trivial applications. The first half of the book presents group theory, through the Sylow theorems, with enough material for a semester-long course. The second-half is suitable for a second semester and presents rings, integral domains, Boolean algebras, vector spaces, and fields, concluding with Galois Theory.

⭐There are many reasons to love this book.PROS1. The author gives it away online, if you want, but the hardcover is so reasonably priced (compare to today’s textbook prices!) that having a printed book and supporting the author is the way to go.2. There is supplementary material at the author’s site, including applications with the incredible freeware math package Sage.3. The book is comprehensive, covering all of the usual theory but also including important modern applications to cryptography.4. The book is clearly written, and, with some diligence, suited to self-study.CONSVery small ones.1. There are a few editing issues (but nothing remotely serious).2. The typeface is small.3. The book takes no prisoners (see below).The book opens with the usual review of proofs, set theory, etc., and then gets into a very comprehensive treatment of groups. Rings are then covered and the book winds up with vector spaces and fields. All about what you’d expect, but the applications are there, especially to cryptography, and advanced stuff (think Galois and the like) is introduced. The problems range from pure exercises to serious challenge, and some solutions are available.The writing is good. The book is clear and lucid, though not wordy: you’ll need to pay close attention especially if learning on your own.Above I mention that the book takes no prisoners. What I mean is that the author does not compromise. Nothing is “light” or “easy” or glossed over. The book demands much of the student and provides much in return. It is most definitely not for dabblers. But if you are serious about learning this subject, the book will pay back your efforts and then some.I have to commend the author for making such a good textbook, with all its supplements, available to the public at such a reasonable cost (no cost at all, if you don’t want the hardcover edition). I hope such offerings can counteract the textbook greed that today harms rather than helps the student. Hats off to Dr. Judson for this easy to recommend book.

⭐I bought this to support the author. Sometimes an explanation of a piece of math was a little iffy. But all in all a very readable book. I loved learning abstract algebra from this book and thought the parts that are useful for computers made this book even better.

⭐The book adds interesting historical enlightenment to books by Pinter & Arangno and gives less rigorous and more concise analysis than Dummit & Foote.

⭐Smaller size makes it easy to take anywhere you go!

⭐Not too terse or too symbolic, very balanced style. Right to the point, easy to understand, and lots of exercises. Including many computer exercises, which is very helpful, since in modern world, you almost can’t avoid writing programs in an office job. Writing math program is a good way to train you logic, and an easy start because you don’t need to know many protocols or interfaces. Besides, abstract algebra itself is very important in computer science.

⭐It’s a good introduction to modern algebra. Much of the material is standard except for the chapters on cryptography. There are some editing flaws, like an exercise asking for a result already proven in the text. For me the book’s key advantage is that it’s available as a pdf free online for my students. The printed copy costs only $20, which I imagine is just the production cost. I bought it to have a desk copy.

⭐I had to buy this book for my Modern Algebra class. I find that sometimes it doesn’t explain things properly (but I guess that’s the case with most math textbooks…) One nice thing is that this is a “free” book. Type the books name into google and you’ll find a nice pdf with the whole book, just waiting for you to print. I only bought the bok because I work better reading from a book and didn’t feel like printing out all those pages.

⭐The content is great — but that is already available online. For free. So this review is mainly of the physical product that is the printed and bound book.The print quality is good. There are no smudges, or missing letters. Unfortunately the binding is horrible. One can’t even open the book all the way, without fear of it breaking! The illusion of “hardcover” is just that. Yes, there is a hardcover, but it is hardly attached to the book at all. I give it a few weeks of use before the “paperback” book inside the hardcover becomes separated from it. The binding is glue. Nothing special. I am very disappointed by this, but for this price I really couldn’t expect much better. It will serve it’s purpose I suppose. In the end, the physical book is not worthy of the content it contains. Shame on publisher.

⭐I use this book for self study. I never did an abstract algebra course in university. This has a nice coverage of introductory topics and just the right amount of problems and solutions.
