This introduction to quantum mechanics is intended for undergraduate students of physics, chemistry, and engineering with some previous exposure to quantum ideas. Following in Heisenberg’s and Dirac’s footsteps, this book is centered on the concept of the quantum state as an embodiment of all experimentally available information about a system, and its representation as a vector in an abstract Hilbert space. This conceptual framework and formalism are introduced immediately, and developed throughout the first four chapters, while the standard Schrödinger equation does not appear until Chapter 5.The book grew out of lecture notes developed by the author over fifteen years of teaching at the undergraduate level. In response to numerous requests by students, material is presented with an unprecedented level of detail in both derivation of technical results and discussion of their physical significance. The book is written for students to enjoy reading it, rather than to use only as a source of formulas and examples. The colloquial and personal writing style makes it easier for readers to connect with the material. Additionally, readers will find short, relatable snippets about the “founding fathers” of quantum theory, their difficult historical circumstances, personal failings and triumphs, and often tragic fate. This textbook, complete with extensive original end-of-chapter exercises, is recommended for use in one- or two-semester courses for upper level undergraduate and beginning graduate students in physics, chemistry, or engineering.

About the Author Dr. Lev Deych is a professor of physics specializing in Optics and Condensed Matter Theory at Queens College (City University of New York). ⭐Clear and comprehensive. Good for self study too.

⭐Let me start by saying that I am on the 3rd chapter and I already love this book. It is a very good read (although I am not sure I buy into the Copenhagen interpretation) and is perfect for self study which is why I purchased the book in the first place. I am neither a student nor a teacher and wanted something that I can learn from. Well, I did lie a bit about that as I do know and understand QM and it is my hobby to read newer publications on the subject. But assume that I am a newbie and trying to teach myself from this book. This book looked good (although no other reviews yet) and it turned out to be quite good. Why am I rating it 3 stars then? Because this book lacks a solution manual or it is not clear how to obtain one – which defeats the proclaimed purpose of self-study. The author says that “The level of technical details in this book would ideally allow students to use it without the need for a lecturer’s explanations” – it does. However, as everybody knows you cannot learn Physics unless you do the problems and this is where a solution manual is extremely useful if not mandatory for a self-learner. I will definitely won’t hesitate to change my review and leave a 5 star should a solution manual be made available (even if I had to pay) – but until then I cannot fully recommend the book and I advise enthusiasts and self learners to look elsewhere.The other problem with the book is with printing – it is printed on a very cheap paper. In some pages there is a button that says ‘click to update’ – WHAT? This is a printed book – how do I click it? Seems like the publisher just prints it on demand when someone purchases it from a pdf on cheap paper. The binding or the pages themselves will not hold up to a reasonable use – shame on Springer for charging so much for a book and publishing on this super this so called ‘acid free’ paper.
