Description

In a short life he accomplished much, and to the roll of great names in the history of his particular studies added his own.’ So is described one of the greatest figures of the twentieth century, yet Alan Turing’s name was not widely recognised until his contribution to the breaking of the German Enigma code became public in the 1970s. The story of Turing’s life fascinates and in the years since his suicide, Turing’s reputation has only grown, as his contributions to logic, mathematics, computing, artificial intelligence and computational biology have become better appreciated. To commemorate the centenary of Turing’s birth, this republication of his mother’s biography is enriched by a new foreword by Martin Davis and a never-before-published memoir by Alan’s older brother. The contrast between this memoir and the original biography reveals tensions and sheds new light on Turing’s relationship with his family, and on the man himself.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐A very good and honest book, written with the loving thoughts and eyes of a mother and with the honesty and sincerity of a brother who has honored Alan by having written so eloquently about him and the truth about his personal life. A man who gave so much of his knowledge and creativity to almost singlehandedly create a machine that gave Europe and the western world the chance to survive the worst danger it has gone through in the last 20 centuries. And yet, was so ruthlessly punished and pushed to his own death by the very same people he helped save!. What an unjust world this is!

⭐This book was very intuitive. I did not know very much about Turing but now I do. I usually read non fiction and I enjoy reading about the early times computers. I worked in telecommucations for 47 years. And installed some the first ESS offices when working for Western Electric.

⭐If you understand the character of Sheldon Cooper on the TV series, “The Big Bang” I think you will enjoy this book, because it’s as if the Big Bang character, whose mom called him “Shelly”, preceded his mom in death and she ended up writing about him. It may have you also wondering the same thing I am, if the real-life Alan M. Turing may have been the inspiration for the writers to create the Sheldon Cooper character.

⭐In fact, two books, in a way, but decidedly a human story about a brilliant man. Alan Turing was critical to the UK’s war effort in WWII. And yet he was so much more. Recommended in tandem with other stories that capture his scientific essence.

⭐Sometimes tedious – at least his Mom’s version. Way too many completely extraneous details. However, in combination with Alan’s brothers’ point of view, this makes for interesting reading with insights only family members can shàre.

⭐It’s an interesting read, but since it was written by his mother it’s highly subjective. She whitewashed a great many things.

⭐A great piece of history – good movie about a man maligned by judgement. A great watch.

⭐I am not sure what I expected from this book, but I didn’t get it. It is the story of his life and it seems to be well researched but I never got a real sense of the man.

⭐Very well written about probably one of the greatest Brits ever. Gives a personal account about the man rather his work. It’s shame really we don’t celebrate turning work enough in this country. Amazing mind

⭐Superb! An insight written largely by his mother. Hence it contained a ‘Mother’s love and tenderness’. A more personal insight than the ‘clinical tomes’ in scientifically based writings. This book also casts doubt upon whether his death by cyanide poisoning was really suicide – maybe a terrible accident by someone who could be a bit careless at time!

⭐If you care about Turing, then this will satisfy your curiosity.

⭐the book has a reasonable price, it arrived in an excellent condition and in time; the book was sold at the London Science Museum when there was the Alan Turing exhibition in 2013 and I didn’t buy it then because I was in a hurry, it is good in itself but also a fine souvenir from that excellent exhibition

⭐I purchased the book after watching the film based on his work at bletchly park. It’s interesting to see how different he comes across from the film and it’s eye opening. Was a good read although I did find certain parts of it more of a grind to read then a nice flowing book.
