Description

Alexander Graham Bell forever changed the world. The telephone and his many other landmark inventions rank among the most transforming and enduring of the modern era. But it was his work with the deaf, teaching as well as inventing tools to ease communication, that he considered his life’s work. The son of a speech therapist father and hearing impaired mother, his stellar achievements in sound reproduction and aviation give proof that he fit his own definition of an inventor. He said, “An inventor a man who looks upon the world and is not contented with things as they are. He wants to improve whatever he sees, he wants to benefit the world.” This is a compelling biography of a true scientific visionary.Oxford Portraits in Science is an on-going series of scientific biographies for young adults. Written by top scholars and writers, each biography examines the personality of its subject as well as the thought process leading to his or her discoveries. These illustrated biographies combine accessible technical information with compelling personal stories to portray the scientists whose work has shaped our understanding of the natural world.

User’s Reviews

Editorial Reviews: From School Library Journal Grade 6-9. This extremely useful book concentrates more on Bell’s work as an educator and inventor than on his personal life. Two-to-three page inserts explain the various scientific principles discussed in the main text. For example, Bell was intensely involved in teaching the deaf. As this part of his life is discussed, an insert explains sound, speech, and hearing, and how all three are intertwined. Glimpses of the man behind the scientist are given in a lively, yet informative fashion. Black-and-white photos and reproductions enhance the presentation and bring the personal details to life. Although there are many books on Bell available, this one is a worthy addition to any collection.?Melissa Hudak, North Suburban District Library, Roscoe, ILCopyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc. Review “An excellent brief life of a complicated figure and his time…includes useful sidebars explaining the workings of a telephone and a photophone and basic facts on speech and sound…. An excellent survey of the fascinating life of a great inventor and teacher. I heartily recommend it.”–Isis About the Author Naomi Pasachoff is at Williams College. Read more
