Description

First printed in 1967, this book has been essential reading for aspiring algebraic number theorists for more than forty years. It contains the lecture notes from an instructional conference held in Brighton in 1965, which was a milestone event that introduced class field theory as a standard tool of mathematics. There are landmark contributions from Serre and Tate. The book is a standard text for taught courses in algebraic number theory. This Second Edition includes a valuable list of errata compiled by mathematicians who have read and used the text over the years.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I was very satisfied at the book except only the its cover. This book’s cover is soft then its cover was damaged a little during the delivery. The right-bottom part is wrinkle. There was two air packings in the box, but one of them had been popped when I opened it. During the delivery, I think, the book was damaged. But this is not so big enough to disturb reading it, so I will not return or complain this book. Please just be careful not to occur this matter again.Thank you very much.

⭐and others topics in algebraic number theory. For a beginner could be hard to read depending on his/her maturity. It requires a basic background on Galois theory, algebraic number theory (the book by D. Marcus, for instance, should do the job) and homological algebra (the online notes by J. Milne on class field theory contain a nice and short intro to homological algebra) because many important subjects are treated by using cohomology following the philosophy of Artin and Tate on class field theory (for a somewhat opposite philosophy on class field theory, see the book Basic Number Theory by A. Weil). Once you master all these basic topics, you will learn a lot from this book.

⭐The content is, again, amazing. And the printing is again disappointing — I wonder how much profits the publisher gets out of each copy — how could a book be so poorly printed? Especially, when it is actually one of the best books out there for introduction to number theory?

⭐This book is really of nice quality, words are clearly printed.

⭐This outstanding text has been out of print for over ten years, and during that time was the most wanted out-of-print number theory book. The travesty is ended and it is finally available to graduate students everywhere. Tate’s thesis alone is worth the price of the book, but the reader is also treated to excellent expository articles on class field theory by top-notch mathematicians. Now if we can just get Borevich and Shafarevich back in print too…

⭐This book is one of the best places to learn class field theory. It is a true classic.

⭐Einfach perfekt!
