Description
Space weather is an emerging field of space science focused on understanding societal and technological impacts of the solar-terrestrial relationship. The Sun, which has tremendous influence on Earth’s space environment, releases vast amounts of energy in the form of electromagnetic and particle radiation that can damage or destroy satellite, navigation, communication and power distribution systems. This textbook introduces the relationship between the Sun and Earth, and shows how it impacts our technological society. One of the first undergraduate textbooks on space weather aimed at non-science majors, it uses the practical aspects of space weather to introduce space physics and give students an understanding of the Sun-Earth relationship. Definitions of important terms are given throughout the text. Key concepts, supplements, and review questions are given at the end of each chapter to help students understand the materials covered. This textbook is ideal for introductory space physics courses.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐The book: This is a very nice book introducing the impacts of solar variability on the technological systems that we humans rely on. It is an essential read for any space physicist, and is written in a clear and concise form which is suitable for any graduate student or even undergraduates. The company: My original order for this book was unfortunately lost in the mail, but as soon as I alerted the company they wasted no time and shipped a second copy to my house free of charge, using expedited mail, to make sure I received the product. You don’t see much of this sort of outstanding customer service these days – well done to “books n’ plenty”.
⭐I’m new to the concept of space weather. I was trained in sat com and familiar with space com concepts. I am not taking it for a college course. It is for my personal reading. It was advertised as an introduction to the subject matter for non-science majors. It is true to its word. I would recommend it.
⭐I am using this book right now for a class and I really enjoy the book! It is an easy read and very interesting. I am glad I own this book and I am glad I am taking the class that requires this book.
⭐Great book. Really helped me understand the physics. It starts out simple and slowly builds up
⭐I purchased this book (Kindle version) for research into my thesis for a Master’s degree. It is well written and makes a very complex topic easy to understand for the non-astronomer/scientist. Highly recommended for the layperson to better understand and interesting topic.
⭐A clearly written book about a complicated but important subject. Reviews important topics with talking down to the reader by a scientist who has had a lot of of experience in Antarctica.
⭐This book starts off with the sun, everything in space weather comes from the sun and is largely based off of planetary interactions that proceed from there. Its is also great in how the chapters proceed step-wise from how our understanding of space weather phenomenon evolved over time with the efforts of many scientists building up over time. You’ll see this in people charting sunspots and the aurora, if it weren’t for diligent note taking it would have taken many more years to figure out.
⭐If you do not want to know the cause of space weather but only historical events this is a good book to buy. Well written and full of interesting historical anecdotes about the effect of the sun on the earth. I was hoping though for a decent explanation of space weather, the physics of it all, but this book does not provide that. I kept skipping ahead looking for something more informative but did not find it, and soon put the book next to the waste paper bin.
⭐Good introduction to the subject. Pitched at the right level for the beginner.
⭐A great book for an introduction to space weather concepts. Very well written and easy to follow.
