Combines analysis and tools from probability, harmonic analysis, operator theory, and engineering (signal/image processing)Interdisciplinary focus with hands-on approach, generous motivation and new pedagogical techniquesNumerous exercises reinforce fundamental concepts and hone computational skillsSeparate sections explain engineering terms to mathematicians and operator theory to engineersFills a gap in the literature
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐I believe this book is only useful as lecture notes and not a textbook for those who do not have access to the actual classes. It is not written in the proper and systematic way. The author for example uses the “.” notation for a variable without stating what it means. He introduces # notation as cardinality of a set without telling you right there that # stands for cardinality (it is in the list of symbols but it is not referred to where it must) Chapters are likewise disorganized and sections do not build up understanding. The author wants to be creative and introduce ideas from multiple directions. This is an advantage for a workshop or class environment but don’t waste your time and money if you are interested in fractals, or probability or wavelets or signal processing or harmonic analysis…. instead buy the standard focused texts. There is no royal road to mathematics but there are good textbooks and this is not one of them. I did not give it one star because if you already know all of these subjects, perhaps this book is good essay in how they relate to each other. The author should have simply put these notes on his webpage for free rather than create a textbook out of them. It is now days a custom to make a textbook out of poorly developed notes; it is unfortunate.
⭐I am very sorry to say this but I am surprised GTM would publish something of this quality. This book contains a lot of information but as a textbook it is just terrible. As a previous reviewer said, it is incoherent and not well-organized. It reads like classroom lectures recorded verbatim and dressed up by sprinkling references to research literature throughout. Very bad approach for a book. For a book apparently aimed at promoting the applied mathematics point of view, it actually gives very little context locally, meaning in each chapter or section or remark. It deviates from the usual math textbook pattern (motivation/context/special cases -> general definitions of main objects -> theorems and proofs -> references and further results) and does not do it well. The prerequisites listed in the beginning of each chapter can be somewhat frivolous.
⭐Modern electronic devices such as cameras and computers use (among others) thejpeg-format to store photographs. Millions of people employ such wavelet-basedtechnology every day. In sharp contrast to that, only a few thousand people onthe planet have a detailed understanding of the mathematics concerning theC*-algebras O_n even though (as the book under review shows) there is astrong relationship between the two. This book entertains and educates the reader with a high-precision tourconnecting very current technological advances such as high-tech filters andcompression methods, classical mathematics such as wavelets and probabilitytheory and advanced, new mathematical methods such as non-commutative Hilbertspace operator algebra applications. This book distinguishes itself by placingmodern mathematics close to modern technology and by showing (again) that puremathematics is not necessarily only for mathematics’ sake. The author PalleE.T. Jorgensen is a world-class mathematician with a distinguished publicationrecord. This is a book that *every* student of mathematics should read inorder to be guided and motivated what courses to take, what other more basicbooks to read, and what research to pursue. This is a book that computerscientists, physicists and engineers should read. In my opinion, it couldspawn new innovation, maybe no patents, but benefits for all of mankind.
⭐I completely agree with Mr. Schmitt. The Texts gets rapidly more difficult, but the beginning is very accessible and especially clear presented. I would recommend it very much.
⭐Prompt and efficient service from this reliable seller. Item as described, perfect condition. Very pleased with the deal. Thanks a lot.
