Description
Enables chemical engineers to use mathematics to solve common on-the-job problemsWith its clear explanations, examples, and problem sets, Applied Mathematics and Modeling for Chemical Engineers has enabled thousands of chemical engineers to apply mathematical principles to successfully solve practical problems. The book introduces traditional techniques to solve ordinary differential equations as well as analytical methods to deal with important classes of finite-difference equations. It then explores techniques for solving partial differential equations from classical methods to finite-transforms, culminating with??numerical methods??including orthogonal collocation. This Second Edition demonstrates how classical mathematics solves a broad range of new applications that have arisen since the publication of the acclaimed first edition. Readers will find new materials and problems dealing with such topics as:Brain implant drug deliveryCarbon dioxide storageChemical reactions in nanotubesDissolution of pills and pharmaceutical capsulesHoneycomb reactors used in catalytic convertersNew models of physical phenomena such as bubble coalescenceLike the first edition, this Second Edition provides plenty of worked examples that explain each step on the way to finding a problem’s solution. Homework problems at the end of each chapter are designed to encourage readers to more deeply examine the underlying logic of the mathematical techniques used to arrive at the answers. Readers can refer to the references, also at the end of each chapter, to explore individual topics in greater depth. Finally, the text’s appendices provide additional information on numerical methods for solving algebraic equations as well as a detailed explanation of numerical integration algorithms.Applied Mathematics and Modeling for Chemical Engineers is recommended for all students in chemical engineering as well as professional chemical engineers who want to improve their ability to use mathematics to solve common on-the-job problems.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐A good book. It’s a touch over my head but I suppose that’s why I want to read it. It’s in decent shape for a used book.
⭐The book was advertised as new condition. It is not.
⭐I found the book in good condition. Price was much cheaper than nearby stores of Philadelphia PA. Free shipping was on time.
⭐The book was exactly as it was described. It was shipped promptly and arrived in time for classes.
⭐This is the most popular book on applied mathematics and modeling in chemical engineering. As late as 1985 Neal Amundson “had decried the fact that while there was a plethora of books on applied mathematics, none was really suitable for courses for chemical engineering students”. Rice and Do’s book is a worthy successor to the very popular “Application of Differential Equations to Chemical Engineering Problems” authored by Marshall and Pigford at the University of Delaware in 1947.
⭐This is an excellent and focused book for graduate ChemE’s. Lots of the problems are the types you would see in graduate transport and controls courses. Everything is written with ChemE problems in mind. It’s not like other textbooks, like Kreyzig’s, that simply put out a bunch of generic problems to solve; still, Kreyzig’s textbook is an engineering math classic, and you should have it on-hand in case you need some extra explanations. It is certainly better than the text of Varma and Morbidelli, which tends to move off-topic quickly and answer several unnecessary problems. This text by Rice and Do is the best I’ve seen, but it is really hard to get a hold of. Good luck getting it, as it is certainly a good investment.
⭐This is an excellent book that talks about various mathematical tools and its applications for Process Modeling. This start with the very basic funamentals and finishes at the highest level. This is a rare book that describes the theorotical fundamentals of mathematical Derivations in Chemical Engineering unlike other books that majorly contain Numerical Methods
⭐Very good quality!
