Description
Most functions that occur in mathematics cannot be used directly in computer calculations. Instead they are approximated by manageable functions such as polynomials and piecewise polynomials. The general theory of the subject and its application to polynomial approximation are classical, but piecewise polynomials have become far more useful during the last twenty years. Thus many important theoretical properties have been found recently and many new techniques for the automatic calculation of approximations to prescribed accuracy have been developed. This book gives a thorough and coherent introduction to the theory that is the basis of current approximation methods. Professor Powell describes and analyses the main techniques of calculation supplying sufficient motivation throughout the book to make it accessible to scientists and engineers who require approximation methods for practical needs. Because the book is based on a course of lectures to third-year undergraduates in mathematics at Cambridge University, sufficient attention is given to theory to make it highly suitable as a mathematical textbook at undergraduate or postgraduate level.

⭐Overall very good book. The first 3 chapters are known to be difficult reading, however the remainder of the book is very good. A useful reference.
⭐I used this book in grad school to study up on numerical approximations. In my engineering career, subsequently, I’ve read other books on the topic but have finally come back to this one. This book is so well organized and thought out that it is a pleasure to read. It also contains the right level of theoretical and practical information that is needed for someone comfortable with math. The book does not go into details on finite-precision arithmetic so you’ll need a complementary book for that if those issues are relevant for you.Even if you don’t _need_ to know this stuff it is still really interesting and worth reading about. This is the right book at the right level for doing that.
⭐excellent!
⭐Decently printed print on demand book for an OU Masters course. Be nicer if it was cheaper but that’s par for the course for this type of textbook. The textbook itself is from the 80s and is, as you’d expect, very traditional in style. Not one for light reading outside of a course requirement.
⭐Very comprehensive. You will need a good understanding of mathematic notation, the exercises are good but I wish the book was accompanied with a answer book so I could check my answers.
⭐Very good seller, the content of the book is however, not my favorite.
⭐Excellent
