    Description

Most people gave England a modest chance of success. Some, like Glenn McGrath, insisted that history would repeat itself and Australia would administer another 5-0 whitewash. What no one anticipated was that the 2010-11 Ashes Tests would see one of the most complete performances ever by an England touring side, the first Ashes victory on Australian soil for 24 years, with, uniquely, three innings victories. It was a series, indeed a tour, full of remarkable records, from the bats of Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott, and the ball of James Anderson and Graham Swann. Every member of the side made crucial contributions—even those like Chris Tremlett and Tim Bresnan who had not originally been first choices for the Tests. Now, Gideon Haigh, “one of the best living writers on cricket” (Daily Telegraph), tells the full story of this amazing sporting achievement. Beginning with the build-up to the series—Australia going into it on the back of an uncharacteristic losing run, England after a year of quietly solid consolidation—he covers each Test, day by day, in pithy match reports and elegant analyses. Ashes 2011 is the perfect way to re-live a memorable sporting triumph.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I read the book, hoping to find something good about the thrashing the poms gave us.The summer was bad as I remembered, from picking a player the selectors hadn’t bowel, to the by rote press conferences.Gideon sums up how hopeless the summer was in his usual thoughtful style

⭐Gideon Haigh delivers another excellent book that describes the 2010-2011 Ashes Series in Australia. In my opinion it is better than his book describing the 2005 series in England because he describes in more detail the situations that the Australian team found themselves in as the series progressed; he is quite critical of the Aussies and a number of their players; and is surprisingly complimentary about the England team and its players. It helps that I am an England fan, and that England played so well in the series (except at Perth) because it is always a pleasure to see Australia struggle! Of course they got their revenge in the 2014 series in Australia (winning 5-0, and deservedly so). I read the book whilst watching the DVD of the series – a true enjoyment for an English cricket fan.

⭐I’ve always enjoyed reading Haigh in the Guardian and Cricinfo and I wasn’t disappointed by this. Brought back great memories of the series and I hope to read his accounts of the next series soon!(assuming similar outcomes of course)

    ⭐Good price – thanks

⭐This book did nothing for me and I’m a passionate cricket lover. Sorry, not a book I’d recommend to anyone.

⭐Good summing up of the 2010/11 series from an Australian perspective.
