⭐This book covers most interesting topics in this area.Dr. Bradt wrote in a detailed and structured way.Totally worth it.

⭐This book goes together with Hale Bradt’s previous, and the pair make for an indispensible reference set for interested scientists and engineers (like myself). Set aside a lot of time though, these are DENSE comprehensive books, and I am not even mentioning the exercises. Honestly I have not read everything, it is not exactly bedtime reading plus I am not professionnally involved in astronomy, but I like the subject and I must say this guy knows his stuff, he can write, and he provides a new angle in the cornucopia of astronomy/astrophysics books I have seen (many of them from Cambridge University Press). Recommended !

⭐Many universities offer a astronomy class for their undergraduate physics students that covers basics like the differences between planets and stars, Kepler’s laws, what a galaxy looks like and what types are out there, what happens inside of a star…… but they usually stop just when it gets interesting, because the average first year student these classes have in mind have yet to learn the math and physics for further details.This is a book about such details. You’ll learn how a planet’s orbit looks like at different angles. You’ll learn about the finer details of the fusion processes inside of a star. And you’ll find all of it in one place, and not spread over dozens of highly specialized textbooks – which more often than not assume you somehow became familiar with these details already.It is also well-written, highly affordable and durable. The book is also full of really helpful exercises that will help you immensely in the transition from “well-informed amateur” to “professional astrophysics”.

⭐del mismo autor. Es menos fundamental que esta, más especializada, en el sentido de tratar con detalle doce procesos astrofísicos. Pero yo diría que es una forma de usar temas aparentemente especializados para ejercitar los fundamentos. Por ejemplo el capítulo 3 “Equations of state” recorre temas fundamentales: la distribución de Maxweell-Boltzmann, la función de distribución en el espacio de fases, el gas ideal, el gas de fotones, y el gas electrónico degenerado. Aunque uno pueda haber estudiado en física estos temas y se los sepa, da gusto aprenderlos mejor, y además asociarles a aplicaciones “estelares”.Me encanta por ejemplo el tratamiento de la degeneración del gas, primero en una dimensión, con estupendos dibujos del espacio de fases bidimensional, y poder entender gráficamente qué significa la degeneración (en su sentido más plenamente inocente); luego pasar al caso tridimensional, y acabar viendo las drásticas consecuencias de la diferencia de las ecuaciones de estado entre el caso no relativista y el relativista.Impecable la edición de Cambridge University Press, con su descripción inicial, tabla de contenidos detallados, lista de figuras y de tablas, glosario de abreviaturas, apéndices, y un índice generoso; lo que cabe esperar de todo texto universitario que se precie.
