Description

From Ancient Greek philosophy to the French Revolution to the modern welfare state, in Authority and the Individual Bertrand Russell tackles the perennial questions about the balance between authority and human freedom. With characteristic clarity and deep understanding, he explores the formation and purpose of society, education, moral evolution and social, economical and intellectual progress. First of the famous BBC Reith lectures, this wonderful collection delivers Russell at his intellectual best.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐Well written and he’s always great for removing himself for the overly simple left/right, capitalism/communism divide. Some of what he argues here is relevant today. You won’t succeed in controlling mankind if you seek to make us timid and obedient, the reaction to that will always show how foolish a venture it is. I worry that nowadays with the level of regulation, pc rules, and state intervention we are teaching our young people to ignore their creative drives, and as it is suppressed it becomes a loaded spring that can just as easily lead to destruction, when the inevitable happens and the volcano erupts.

⭐The audio from the first two of these six lectures can be found online, and with a lot of searching I was able to find the third one, but the remaining lectures were nowhere to be found. Luckily there are still a few copies of the lectures in book form floating around at some libraries and on Amazon. The book is less than 100 pages in length, and it’s an easy read. Nevertheless, these are some of the best and most important lectures on human society that I know of, and I would highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in these topics.

⭐It is full of typos that seem to have come from the use of OCR. Would be great if these could be corrected.

⭐Russell always one of the best combining logic, reason, and moral persuasion without religion.

⭐I would recommend this book to somebody who wants to broaden their intellectual horizons and possibly here a well reasoned argument that would expand their political ideology.

⭐This book is a series of thought provoking BBC broadcasts by one of the pre eminent philosophers of the 20th century. Both right and left leaning individuals will have much to contemplate in perusing this work.

⭐I found amazing and helpful quotes out of this book. I think he gets it very wrong with regards to his affinity to Christianity. But beyond that there’s wisdom contained here.

⭐As usual, Russell explains concepts clearly, without dogma yet with much prescience. A short yet very enjoyable book. Highly recommended

⭐What can you say , blueprint for future governments behaviour

⭐the lectures are lucid and great in themselves as they posit the way for a world in which the good life is posited and what exactly Russelll means by the good life. He assumes that the world state a type of united nations structure which has increased powers is the form of government of the future but we don’t know what comprises this world state or how it came into being and its one of the weaknesses of the book. The world state we assume makes laws with the smaller state or governments in which people live the nations and that is the countries where people live. Russell admits that the busting up of empires has broken their powers over people but he assumes that nations today can be all powerful and belittle people and that it is through organizations as they exist in capitalist and communist nations that people are empowered to have rights as citizens and its to these he looks but he sees the danger as in formerly communist nations where freedoms do not exist to write books or perform in plays or take part in artistic endeavors which people enjoy in capitalistic countries.Authority and the individual I found to be a good book but its a loosely held series of lectures held together by the common theme of social cohesion. What holds society together the organizations which comprise society and to which people belong and in which they gain the freedom to be citizens and enjoy the rights they formerly never had in the old empires. The politicians who hold sway in these new states can become all powerful but the citizen authorizes the politician in these states to make laws and that is where he gains his power is what Russell I believe is really trying to say. Recommended!

⭐A thorough and thoughtful analysis of the competing, though equally necessary forces of central authority and individual liberty.Unfortunately the spelling in some Chapters leaves to be desired.

⭐It contains too many typos and weird letter omissions/replacements. makes it difficult to read although the contents are interesting and relevant

⭐Eye-openerRecommend for all who think, about the relationship of society ,individual and authority.Bertrand Russell is amazingly succint as always.
