Description

Hans-Georg Gadamer is considered to have made the most important contribution to hermeneutics of this century through his major work, Truth and Method. Born in Marburg on February 11, 1900, he earned his doctorate under Paul Natorp, the Plato scholar, in 1922 and completed his habilitation thesis on Plato’s dialectical ethics under Martin Heidegger in 1928. He spent the major portion of his teaching career at the University of Heidelberg, becoming emeritus professor in 1968. In retirement he became widely known in the United States through his regular fall courses at Boston college and his numerous lectures at major universities throughout the century.

⭐Anything Gadamer wrote is worth reading. This book, a series of lectures in Italian–in addition to his native German, Gadamer spoke English, French, and Italian and read ancient Greek and Latin–and directed to a general university audience. It discusses how, from the stream of sense-experience the Pre-Socratic philosophers began to perceive and articulate what we now recognize as the stable concepts of thought and thinking; that is, the origins and the nature and process of putting into words that which we experience through the senses. This may sound trivial, but it is what has made us what we call “human”. For in the linguistic universe of humanity more reality is comprehended than in mere sense experience. Indeed we achieve clarity about reality in the ideas and dialogues we create than in pure sense experience. Thus what Gadamer is trying to express–and evoke in the reader–is the process of conceptual thinking as it recognizes deeper and deeper truths about reality, about thought, about human consciousness. What the ancient Greeks opened up to the Western world was philosophical reflection. They asked: how do we get concepts such as freedom, equality, and truth when none of these “things” exists in reality? What, the ancient Greeks asked is the principle of life? Plato said it was the soul; we today say it is self-consciousness. But to what do such words refer? Neither exists as does a rock. Both words refer to the result we call life. But what does that word mean? Is life different for the birds than it is for the humans? These are important questions, but they are not questions that can be answered by the methodological and mathematical rigor of the scientific enterprise. They can be asked and explored by individual humans as they live their “life”, or they can be totally ignored. Is one’s “life” is made richer by asking such questions? Undoubtedly. Is “life” poorer by not asking such questions? Undoubtedly. Hence, reading a philosopher of Gadamer’s insight, reading philosophy, expands one’s life.

⭐He’s the best continental philosopher, probably.
