Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐Like another reviewer, I purchased this before I took an actual Computer Science 1 with Java class. This book is actually better at teaching Java than my teacher is. The structure and format is great and it’s very entry level oriented. I would definitely recommend this for someone who is serious about getting into computer programming.
⭐This book was a god send. My programming instructor was terrible at explaining even the basics. I was at risk of failing my first semester of college. Thankfully, this book helped get me back on my feet with enough knowledge to not only pass my first semester with flying colors, but also get ahead of everyone else the next semester. I will definitely be buying another one of Burd’s books. It was a much easier read than any of the text books I had to purchase for school. Made learning a lot more fun.
⭐HiThis book does a decent job of describing Java syntax and how to use it. But it is written as if Java were a structured programming language and doesn’t address the ideas of classes until late in the book. I am using this book to teach my daughter Java and supplemented with a lot of OO concepts to give her a framework for understanding what she was doing.I also supplemented this with my own exercises as the exercises in the book were only fair.
⭐Very difficult for beginners and “dummies” as the title implies
⭐The first 10 pages which I read very quickly taught me in no time how the Computer understands directions. This was the hook that got me very interested in this book. If you have a Computer and want to learn Basic Java Programming I suggest that you read this book because it is very, very understandable for anyone who wants to learn (easily) the basic fundamentals regarding programming. You will find out for yourself what a joy it will be to learn how to create your very own Computer programs.
⭐This is a good book if you intend to use it correctly. It reads well and is definitely not too dry. The information is accurate and there is plenty of inspirational material from which we can delve further into the deepest darkest annals of programming through other sources. This book should be used as a weekend read to prep you for other more comprehensive sources in order to weaken the blow to your cranium. It ends with many questions(but not too many) that are answered through further study.
⭐Great source of information! Great for beginners!
⭐I bought this book for my husband. Computers are his department in our house. He likes to learning new things about computers. He tries many different operating systems, lots of different software, and uses multiple programming formats. He has other books from the “for dummies” line and he does like them. When he’s looking for information, this line of books is usually his first and favorite source.
⭐I will be studying Java and Android for the next 4 months, so I decided to get a book to try learn some basics beforehand.I had previously studied C and C++, but was still a bit shaky on programming in general. I found this book a bit easy for the most part, but it was a great refresher on basic concepts along with Java Specific Stuff. I will see in the coming months how I fare in college. My advice:- if you have never programmed before this book is perfect for you- if you have programmed before, maybe you would be better off with the Java For Dummies book,as this book may be a bit easy for you
⭐If, like me, you have an interest in getting to grips with Java but have no prior experience of the language, and/or little or no experience of programming generally, then this book offers a great place to start. It represents basic principles in a non-technical way, making good use of analogy to help the reader understand some of the more abstract concepts.I would therefore recommend this book to anyone starting out on the Java journey.I would however add that, towards the endof the book, the subjects become more complex and so the content become less and less comprehensive/helpful in terms of developing a full understanding. That’s ok though in my view, since it’s unrealistic to expect any one ‘technical’ book to offer all things to all levels of competency.Instead, the subjects towards the end should be viewed more as an introduction to ‘other stuff that Java can do’, to whet your appetite. Inevitably though further reading will be required to build a comprehensive understanding of these more complex areas.
⭐THESE BOOKS HAVE BEEN A STARTING POINT FOR MANY PEOPLE STARTING TO LEARN A NEW DISCIPLINE.I AM CONVINCED THAT A CLEAR AND CONCISE WAY TO LEARN IS A MUST NOT A CONDEMNATION OF I.Q.ALL OF US LEARN AND THINK IN BITE SIZED PACKETS OF INFO , AND BUILD UPON THAT FOUNDATION .THIS BOOK IS THE WAY ALL BOOKS AND EDUCATION ESTABLISHMENTS SHOULD BE (AND SELDOM ARE) TEACHING THEIR STUDENTS !SO, IT IF YOU WANT A GOOD FOUNDATION OF KNOWLEDGE AND A REFERENCE SOURCE BUY THIS BOOK OR ONE LIKE IT!
⭐This book is a fun read but sometimes concepts arent clear enough and would result in having to search it online. This book also focuses on the real basics of Java.
⭐Covers the first waystage competently and engagingly. Too chatty for me.
