Description

Everyone knows a couple like Jack and Grace. He has looks and wealth; she has charm and elegance. He’s a dedicated attorney who has never lost a case; she is a flawless homemaker, a masterful gardener and cook, and dotes on her disabled younger sister. Though they are still newlyweds, they seem to have it all. You might not want to like them, but you do. You’re hopelessly charmed by the ease and comfort of their home, by the graciousness of the dinner parties they throw. You’d like to get to know Grace better.

But it’s difficult, because you realize Jack and Grace are inseparable.

Some might call this true love. Others might wonder why Grace never answers the phone. Or why she can never meet for coffee, even though she doesn’t work. How she can cook such elaborate meals but remain so slim. Or why she never seems to take anything with her when she leaves the house, not even a pen. Or why there are such high-security metal shutters on all the downstairs windows.

Some might wonder what’s really going on once the dinner party is over, and the front door has closed.

From bestselling author B.A. Paris comes the gripping thriller and international phenomenon Behind Closed Doors.

Review An August 2016 Best Books of the Month by Real Simple magazineAn August 2016 Indie Next pick and LibraryReads list pickAn August 2016 Book Club Pick by Popsugar: “Perfect for fans of The Girl on the Train!”As seen featured in The Skimm’s newsletter: “It’ll have you page turning ‘til the end.”“If you’re hunting for a thriller to give you chills in August, look no further than this book, which is already a big hit in the U.K.” ―Real Simple magazine “This debut is guaranteed to haunt you ― especially if you’re about to tie the knot. Paris’s thriller asks the question: ‘The perfect marriage or the perfect lie?’ Jack and Grace, the couple at the center of this totally enthralling novel, are so clearly not what they seem you’ll have no choice but to read and read and read until their darkest secrets are revealed. Warning: brace yourself.” ―Bustle (10 New Thrillers to Read This Summer)“A gripping domestic thriller…the sense of believability and terror that engulfs Behind Closed Doors doesn’t waver.” ―The Associated Press, picked up by The Washington Post“B.A. Paris takes the cliché about not knowing what goes on beyond closed doors to nightmarish place…. Each chapter escalates the tensions and stakes faced by Grace in the nightmare that is her new ‘perfect’ marriage to Jack.” ―Huffington Post“Behind Closed Doors takes a classic tale to a whole new level…This was one of the best and [most] terrifying psychological thrillers I have ever read…each chapter brings you further in, to the point where you feel how Grace must feel. The desperation, the feeling that no one will believe you and yet still wanting to fight because someone you care deeply about will get hurt.” ―San Francisco Book Review“Paris grabs the reader from the beginning with a powerful and electrifying tale. Behind Closed Doors, a novel sure to make one’s skin crawl, also reveals no one truly knows what does go on behind closed doors.”―New York Journal of Books“This dark and twisted thriller will keep you on your toes and have you wondering exactly what goes on behind your neighbor’s door.”―Buzzfeed (“6 Thriller/Mystery Reads That Will Have You Sleeping With the Lights On”)“Really freaking creepy. And really good. Until the end, which was an honest gasp and imaginary pearl clutching moment. Yes, that good. Reader, if you want to read the thriller that enthralled even this jaded soul, pick up Behind Closed Doors by BA Paris…. Then draw the blinds and turn off your phone because you will not want any interruptions.”― LitHub (“18 Books You Should Read This August”)“Debut-novelist Paris adroitly toggles between the recent past and the present in building the suspense of Grace’s increasingly unbearable situation, as time becomes critical and her possible solutions narrow. This is one readers won’t be able to put down.” ―Booklist (starred review)“Making her smash debut, Paris [keeps] the suspense level high. In the same vein as Gone Girl or Girl on the Train, this is a can’t-put-down psychological thriller.” ―Library Journal (starred review)“Newlyweds Grace and Jack Angel seem to lead a perfect life in British author Paris’s gripping debut, but appearances can be deceiving…Grace’s terror is contagious, and Millie’s impending peril creates a ticking clock that propels this claustrophobic cat-and-mouse tale toward its grisly, gratifying conclusion.” ―Publishers Weekly“A frighteningly cool portrait of a serious sadist, Behind Closed Doors is a gripping, claustrophobia-inducing thriller… Read at the risk of running from every handsome British lawyer who crosses your path.” ―Romantic Times“This book proves that looks are most definitely deceiving…Disturbing, to say the least, readers will definitely be shaken as the story commences and they become immediately absorbed. The writing was incredible, and the pace is quick, offering up too many chills to count…Behind Closed Doors screams: ‘Stay single!’” ―Suspense Magazine“B.A. Paris’s debut, Behind Closed Doors, is a chilling confirmation of the adage that no one ever really knows what transpires in other people’s private lives…. Paris has created one of the most heinous villains in recent memory, upon whom even the most pacifist of readers might wish torturous revenge. They’ll likely remain behind their own closed doors as they race through this thriller to see how, or if, the nightmare ends.” ―Shelf Awareness”This book just has to be huge in 2016. I flew through it in two breathless sittings. Quite simply: astounding.” ―S.J.I. Holliday, author of Black Wood”This outstanding debut novel will leave you breathless.” ―Bella”This one is 2016’s answer to Gone Girl. Nuff said.” ―Women’s Health UK”It took me just an afternoon to read this book and by the end, my heart was pounding. If you like fast and frantic stories, you’ll love this.” ―The Sun”Behind Closed Doors is an intriguing, sharply gripping debut thriller.” ―Lovereading.co.uk”An utterly compelling journey through the darker side of the human psyche. Your blood will run cold but you won’t be able to stop reading, I promise you that.” ―Sarah Harper, Lovereading reviewer”This has been one of my best reads EVER and will be huge in 2016. Congratulations to B A Paris on a remarkable debut book.” ―Shelley Bennett, The Book Club member –This text refers to the mass_market edition.

Reviews from Amazon users, collected at the time the book is getting published on UniedVRG. It can be related to shiping or paper quality instead of the book content:

⭐ The book is written decently but I WAS NOT expecting the content.I was drawn in by the reviews and the book summary but what I thought might be another “Girl on the Train” was actually a pretty messed up story. The book includes abuse of women, including intended abuse on a handicapped girl. It’s DARK to say the least. To make it worse, the ending was probably the most anticlimactic thing I’ve ever read… my response was “That was it?”If you’re into sadistic books, abuse on women, abuse of handicapped, and are cool with some nightmares, this ones for you!

⭐ I wanted to give other animal lovers a warning that I wish I had before I bought this book. It is a slight SPOILER – it happens early on in the book so it doesn’t give much away but stop reading if you don’t want to know anything. Here’s your warning: a puppy dies a horrible death towards the beginning of this book. I have to stop reading it and I will forever curse it because I can’t get it out of my head. The rest of the things that happen are also horrible and I would have probably stopped reading it anyways but this is what decided it. I think it was totally unnecessary to the story but to be fair, I think the author really, REALLY wants you to hate the villain of the story.

⭐ Page 81. That’s how far I read before this book delivered an iota of interesting content. I read beyond that, wanting to believe it was finally going to get better, and I was sorely disappointed. The front and inside cover are littered with raving reviews. Either these people were paid for their glowing comments or they are just as shallow and unintelligent as this story. WOW. It is REALLY bad. I will confess I did not finish it- after being already frustrated 100 pages into the book , I decided to read the amazon reviews and it was just as I expected. The book is predictable and not worth the time. My apologies to the author- as I hate to criticize anyone’s hard work and try to find something good in every book I read. This one I could not, perhaps it is just not ‘my cup of tea’ – but I had to put it down,

⭐ I was thrilled to buy this book after reading a sample as I enjoy domestic suspense, but I couldn’t get past the 20% mark, if I even got that far. Reading this book is an exercise in sadism, like bathing your psyche in razor blades just for fun. Maybe some readers are into that, but I’m not. If you want a good domestic thriller, skip this filth and read “Big Little Lies” or “Before I Go to Sleep” instead. Far superior plot and writing, and without the sadism.

⭐ This story had so many holes in it it should of been called ” Behind Swiss Cheese ” ..The wife had many opportunities to escape but the author made up countless excuses for her, none of them logical..boring, predictable and poorly written..

⭐ A watered down and trumped up gone girl. Shallow. Abuse of a Down syndrome girl and a dog. No great revenge scene to redeem it. I wish I could erase it from my mind.

⭐ Behind Closed Doorsby. B. A. ParisIt feels so good when you dive into a book from a new author to you and you are blown away by it. Behind Close Doors is a suspense/triller like no other. It keeps you on the edge of your sit every single page. You will be constantly asking yourself why oh why??!!! You wont want to put it down for one second. It will make you question sanity and how are people really like behind closed doors. Maybe your neighbor is not as friendly?, maybe your coworker like to do naughty strange things? , maybe I’m a weirdo?!! Jjajaja. The thing is; so many things can happen in the life of a married couple and we wouldn’t know it.“He prides himself on uttering only the truth, and enjoys that I am the only one who understands the meaning behind his words”.In this book we get to go inside the walls of Jack and Grace Angel house. They are the epitome of PERFECTION. Perfect wife, perfect husband, perfect house, perfect job. Just PERFECT EVERYTHING, right??!! Ooooh no, so many things aren’t as we see them and what would that may be would you ask? Well that’s for me to know and for you to find out. Trust me is sooo good. One thing I will let you know is that I have NEVER EVER hated a character as much as I hate Jack Angel. The man is a sadistic psychopath. A wolf wearing sheeps clothing. So go see how this man can make your skin scrawled!!! “It’s a shame he’s such a sadistic bastard, because he has wonderful manners”.

⭐ Damn! This lady can write!! I read psychological thrillers a lot~it’s my favorite genre~~~~but this one tops anything I’ve read in quite a while. I think the content might be too “strong” for some, but being so well written might make it more palatable for those offended by the content. I am beginning to read her second novel, “The Breakdown”. I hope she continues gushing out words, stories, and characters as creative as those in “Behind Closed Doors”.From one who has experienced a similar situation, I wish I could give it more than 5 stars.

⭐ This book was fairly predictable from the first page. And, I found it impossible to believe that in today’s world, this woman wouldn’t have been able to stand up for herself. Just too weak a premise to be an enjoyable read.

⭐ Okay, the guy is psycho, murderous, and going to abuse me and my disabled sister, but please, let me shower before getting away from him because I’ve been on a plane. Beyond unrealistic. Really? You can’t go to the restroom with your friends? Ever? What is he going to do? Say no?!?! Ugh, do youself a favor and just don’t.
