Description

Six-year-old Helen and Ellie are identical twins, but Helen is smarter, more popular, and their mother’s favorite. Ellie, on the other hand, requires special instruction at school, is friendless, and is punished at every turn.

Until they decide to swap places–just for fun, and just for one day–and Ellie refuses to switch back. Everything of Helen’s, from her toys to her friends to her identity, now belongs to her sister. With those around her oblivious to her plight, the girl who used to be Helen loses her sense of self and withdraws into a spiral of behavioral problems, delinquency, and mental illness. In time, she’s not even sure of her memory of the switch.

Twenty-five years later, she receives a call that threatens to pull her back into her sister’s dangerous orbit. Will she take this chance to face her past?

⭐ What begins as an innocent game of switch between 2 twins ends up changing their lives forever. BESIDE MYSELF tells the tragic story that will haunt you for days.Ellie and Helen never had a chance of a normal life from the start. Mental illness plagues their family. Their father’s suicide is not even allowed to be spoken about. This is the catalyst that sends things in motion.Emotional, physical and sexual abuse lay underneath the surface which eventually boils over into the story. The prose is well written and speedily paced. My only complaint would be the changing of each chapter. The story is told from Helen’s POV. However, it changes to present day to the future every other one. I understand the reasoning behind it. But, it was a distraction to be interrupted so abruptly once you get absorbed in the scene.Maybe it would have worked better with the novel broken up into four parts? Either way, this was a well told incredibly tragic story that touches on a great many subjects. I will definitely be looking forward to reading more from Ann Morgan.

⭐ This book was painful to read. The main character, whose identical twin sister has taken over her identity at the age of six, is forced to suffer unbearable cruelty and rejection when no one – not her mother, and not her best friends or teachers, who all used to favor her and ignore her sister – believes her claim that there was a switch. It drives her mad, and she becomes so bitter that it’s difficult to sympathize with her. In fact, it’s difficult to sympathize with ANY of the characters.I finally did come to admire and like poor “Smudge”. There’s a powerful message here about overcoming the faulty image of ourselves that we allow others to form for us.

⭐ I would give this book 4.5 stars if I could. As the end started speeding up, I didn’t really want it to stop. The beginning of the book caused some angst. As the description reads twin girls get mixed up. The swap was the worst part of the book – just completely stressful. I wanted and needed it to stop. However once it got into a rhythm, the story was satisfying and enjoyable. The mental health descriptions were artful and accurate.Read this rollercoaster of a book. You won’t be disappointed.

⭐ Well written. Metaphorical representations of mental illness. Compelling plot.

⭐ This book was sooo much better than I expected! The plot about the twin-switch was a bit unbelievable, but the author’s description of mental health disease was amazing.

⭐ The writing is great in this book. I put myself in Helen’s shoes and it was so sad and frustrating. I felt for the characters!

⭐ Great idea for a story but I found the switching between characters cumbersome.

⭐ Not recommended. Ending lacked substance after a really interesting beginning. Not worth the read. A bit of a disappointment really!

⭐ A good read. Enjoyed the way the story developed.

⭐ Awesome page turner, I couldn’t put it down! Emotions pouring from each word.
