Description

Physically demanding sports such as tennis and basketball have a lot in common with skills such as playing the piano. In addition to physical training, mastering these activities requires developing mental and emotional talents as well. Drawing on his own experiences, Dan Millman, in this revised and updated edition of The Inner Athlete, offers a regimen to integrate physical training with psychological growth. He examines the motivations for athletic excellence and offers a transformative guide to success that is as applicable in everyday life as it is in sports.

⭐I have recently got hooked on reading some of Dan Millman’s books. This is the third one I have (Body Mind Mastery: Training for Sport and life by Dan Millman) read and found most of the advice meaningful and practical. This 166 page soft cover volume explores many of the basic principles of physical and mental success in not just sports but in other parts of your life as well. This book is organized into three parts with nine chapters. Chapter one covers the natural laws you should understand. The power of awareness is covered in chapter two. Preparation is explained in chapter three. Part two explains how to develop mental talent, emotional talent and physical talent. The final part (Body mind mastery in action) deals with the tools for training, competition and cooperation and the evolution of athletics. There is also an epilogue section which covers “Mastering the moving experience.”Most of the material in this book has elements of Zen, Taoism, and other esoteric philosophical principles in its lessons. I also loved the emphasis on learning and mastering the basics (fundamentals) of any sport or activity if you want to succeed. As a lifetime student of numerous martial art systems, in every single one we would always practice the basic techniques before moving on to the other techniques. This emphasis on fundamentals is one of the most important principles in this book.If you are seeking some essential guiding principles to success in sport and life, you should check out this book.Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Zen Poetry Moments: Haiku and Senryu for special occasions).

⭐“Whether you are a world-class competitor, weekend athlete, or fitness enthusiast, this book will help you overcome self-created hurdles and reawaken the natural athlete—the body mind master—inside you. Body Mind Mastery provides a clear map to a less stressful, more meaningful approach to practicing sport and life. It’s not about dedicating your life to your training but dedicating your training to your life.”“Allow rather than resist what arises in the present moment—inside or out. Let it be interesting rather than good or bad.”~ Dan Millman from Body Mind MasteryDan Millman is a former world-champion athlete and gymnastics coach at Stanford and UC Berkeley. He’s also a really cool, wise guy.If you’ve read his classic, semi-autobiographical book, Way of the Peaceful Warrior (that was recently made into a cool movie starring Nick Nolte as Socrates), you know how Dan brilliantly weaves Western and Eastern thought into a practical philosophy for our modern lives. This book is all about integrating our Body and Minds to create a deep sense of wholeness. As Dan says: “You are a dynamic whole greater than the sum of your parts. By integrating your body, mind, and emotions through training, you reshape your life.”Let’s take a quick look on some of the Big Ideas:1. Vigor, Vitality & Activity – A matter of activity.2. The Fear of Failure – A vicious circle.3. Rockin’ It – Baby-style.4. The Moment of Truth – Is NOW!5. Backing Up – To get a running start. As they say, one can have no greater or smaller mastery than mastery of oneself and how you do anything is how you do everything. I say we get out there and shine!(More goodness–including PhilosophersNotes on 250+ books at http://www.brianjohnson.me)

⭐One of my favorite books. Nice short read with a ton of mental exercises & amazing quotes. I’ve recommended this book to so many people. If you really want a better understanding of your body mind connection, you need to read this book!

⭐So motivational and inspiring to keep on seeking

⭐Dan Millman is definetly one of my favorite authors and speakers. Ever since I read his book, Way of the Peaceful Warrior, almost 15 years ago, I have gravitated towards his work. I even translated one of his books, The Laws of Spirit, from English to Icelandic a few years back. My review might therefore be tainted with my admiration : )Body Mind Mastery is a great book for athletes and Millmans approach is balanced and invigorating. He challenges the athletes training routines and mindset with a perfect blend of information and practical guidlines. Many coaches in Iceland have used this book with good outcomes as a result of my recommending it to them.It has even come in handy for people I know that are not professional athletes. The philosophy expounded on can be used in varied situations in life.

⭐If I were to write a book, Body Mind Master has most of the lessons I have learned and couldn’t explain to others. I am now more certain than before, that I am on the right pathway. I have recommended this book to several people who have expressed a desire to find their center – they are looking for a way to be grounded and not be blown around by the ever changing superficial winds. Thank you!

⭐This is only a very personal opinion. I read this author’s original book, a “fiction,” and found it easy to read (a bit simplistic). The writing was average. The same is true of this book. I was hoping for a better reading experience, alas…

⭐Great insight by a great athlete. Millman does a phenomenal job of laying out the exact importance of training and taking care of both the mind body. Highly recommended for anyone working in athletics or anyone who just has a desire to better themselves mentally and physically.

⭐This was in the recommended reading list in one of Rory Miller’s books so I got it as a gift for a friend but took the opportunity to read it before giving it away. Having been a practicing martial artist for around 20 years I found there was plenty in the book to help reinforce and refine my current training and, more importantly, to help my friend whose training is noticeably more athletic than mine. The overarching point that all physical improvement begins with relaxation was very well put and makes a great deal of sense given that Dan Millman’s athletic career was in gymnastics. In some places the book shows its age but the bulk of the information imparted can be considered timeless in its direct relevance to the warrior/athlete path.

⭐Good

⭐If you are interested in understanding some different approaches to “winning” in all manner of ways, this book is well worth a read. Simply and interestingly written, you can find tools to use everyday.

⭐My husband enjoyed reading this present. Dan Millman shares his knowledge kindly and efficiently.

⭐Really pleased with item and dispatched quickly. Thank you.
