Description

The Stracheys were an exceptionally intelligent and unusual family. Prominent in imperial administration, science, and feminism in the nineteenth century, and in the suffrage movement, women’s education, and the bringing of new approaches to sexuality in the twentieth century, they had a wide and significant influence. Examining Lytton Strachey, his parents and nine siblings, Barbara Caine provides a fascinating picture of a diverse and complex family in a period of change from Victorian England to the beat generation.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I bought the book because the Strachey families are related to my partner’s late wife’s family, so it helps with family tree information. (They were a bit of a” wierd” mob! The cover photo of them posing in ‘prayerful look is funny because they were all agnostic.

⭐Fascinating material made difficult to read because it’s poorly put together – repetitive and disjointed. A good editor could do something with this material to produce a fabulous biography.

⭐I agree with the review given by Saspa – this book needs a a decent editor. It is very repetitive to the point where, at times, I heard myself thinking, “Oh God, here we go again!” And it needs a good proofreader. There are many errors, not including the ‘American’ English which the author (not American but Australian) appears to be using. There are several careless errors; for example, the family tree has Lytton Strachey dying in 1912, whilst later in the book he dies in 1930, but later still the correct year is given – 1932! In one passage, Virginia Woolf is said to have written one of the greatest novels of the first half of the 19th century! Chapters are sub-divided into parts, which are numbered, but in one chapter two parts are not given and we go from II to V , and in another there are two part III’s. Of course, these are minor points but they become annoying after a while. But this is a fairly good biography, and a biography of a whole family must be a bit difficult to put together. And what a family the Stracheys were! I have Michael Holroyd’s biography of Lytton Strachey to read and think that Bombay to Bloomsbury will serve as a good introduction to that.

⭐I was delighted with this book. It came quickly and was in excellent condition. A bargain!
