Description

Months after her battles in Wyoming, Allison “Lex” Luther is still struggling with the aftereffects of the psychic attack she suffered—and with the new developments in her own magic. Then Lex’s boss, the cardinal vampire of Colorado, passes along a strange request from her counterpart in Atlanta. Hundreds of Civil War spirits have abruptly vanished in Beau Calhoun’s territory, and he wants Lex to figure out why. In exchange, Beau can help her understand boundary magic, which runs in his family line as well.Despite her trepidation, Lex journeys to the Deep South, where she discovers that ghosts are everywhere…and that her host’s intentions are more complicated than he promised. It seems his teenage descendant is being hunted, and both Beau and Lex fear the young woman’s boundary blood may have made her a target. With Atlanta’s history looming over her every move, Lex will have to face Beau’s ghosts—and her own—to prevent a boundary magic attack she never dreamed possible.

User’s Reviews

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐A new location. A departure from the previous books, but one that has allowed the world to feel fuller.I love how she dealt with the Confederacy and the men. The Civil War is a VERY touchy subject, but the author did a very good job riding that line. Also, the expansion of the world’s magic, who can use it, and the limitations were really well defined in this story.I also liked that Lex was put in the “fish out of water” trope, but also didn’t always “land on her feet”. She’s capable, but not impervious to danger. Some really impressive ideas of how to use magic, though not fitting into the three major boxes, Witches, Vampires and Werewolves. Love the worldbuilding. So, I’m caught up in this series. I do hope that she writes more from this protagonist’s POV. Now, I am going to go back and read the other series within the greater universe.I’ve become a BIG fan of her style of writing. I haven’t mentioned it before, but I love how she is able to put pop culture references within her books. Most often, they make me chuckle and sometimes even outright laugh. Thank you.

⭐Lex is still feeling the aftereffects of her previous adventure in the form of nightmares when Maven asks her to go to Atlanta to help cardinal vampire Beau Calhoun who has a ghost problem. Someone is stealing his ghosts. An incentive is the Beau comes from a boundary magic family and might be able to help Lex learn more about her own boundary magic.Lex has to go alone because Quinn has a daughter in the area that he would be too tempted to visit if he went along. Lex decides to meet his daughter herself so that she can reassure Quinn when she returns and is pleased to meet a stable, confident young woman.Beau’s great niece is another story. Odessa has been raised by Beau since her parents died in a car accident. He has given her the best possible education and encouraged her love of horses. Unfortunately, her desire to go the Olympics with her horse would bring too much publicity to Beau and he forbids it. This leaves Odessa at sort of loose ends.Lex investigates and finds herself in immediate danger. A sniper who just missed killing her but left her with a broken left wrist means that Maven sends in backup. Tobias who is her werewolf friend comes to help. But the next near miss is an exploding spirit bottle that kills one of Beau’s vampire colleagues, injures Beau, and ruins a mahogany obsidian crystal that was a gift from Quinn and kept ghosts from getting into Lex’s head. Now, she’s without protection in a city that is absolutely rife with ghosts and facing an enemy who combines human tactics and witch magic. This was an engaging, fast-paced story with lots of action and excitement. I liked that Lex is learning more about her boundary magic.

⭐If you’re a fan of urban fantasy, then you should give it a chance… If not, then this book probably isn’t for you. This isn’t the first in the series, and I doubt it’s the last. Lex has come a long way, and although not as endearing (in my opinion) as Scarlett, they’re both essentially two sides of the same coin.If you’ve read the other books, then this one won’t disappoint, especially if you like Melissa’s work. If you haven’t then don’t be afraid to read this anyways, because she does make references to other events in the books with little explanations (like flashbacks)… This can be helpful in helping you understand and connect stuff (I thought it was kind of like Dr. Who with how everything sort of weaves together)… but it might also be jarring as it might break up the flow… Personally it made me want to re-read the older books again.I don’t usually read a lot, and have tried some of the other authors recommended by Amazon, but Melissa is the only one that I not only came back to, but went out and actually bought all 19 books, as opposed to using Amazon’s free reading services. I’ve listened to her TED talk, when she was on that podcast, became a patreon member, follow her on various social media, and even met her at GenCon… I guess I became a big fan of her work, and would like to see other people support her worlds as well.

⭐I love Melissa F Olson’s Old World series and I was so delighted to have a chance to read an early copy from Net Galley and provide an honest review. This Atlanta setting takes Lex further away from Colorado than she’s ever been, and I missed her usual cast of secondary characters like Quinn, Maven, and Charlie. However, the setting imbued by literal specters of the Civil War was fascinating and it was a fair trade-off to get to experience this unique setting. This book built on so much of the Old World lore, which makes it a rich entry in the series but also made me want to go back to re-read and immerse myself in all the complex politics and family dynamics. I’m not sure how well it would work as a standalone or entry point, though there is plenty of well woven exposition.I really enjoyed reading this book, even if it didn’t give me the same do-not-interrupt-me-I-will-snap-at-you highs of Boundary Broken. I think it was because even as the story built on everything that came before, there was also so much new that came in, and maybe I was just wanting to hang out with the prior cast of characters. So, a me problem. This book is another great adventure in the Old World series, and I can’t wait to read more of Lex’s journey!

⭐5 stars, again another entertaining book in a well laid out series – I was hoping for more of Quinn and Maven but this book stood well on its own without them.I read but mostly listened via accompanying audio version through Kindle Unlimited. Just a note, if you listen like me, enjoy these fantasy genres then I would suggest you peek at the books I’ve reviewed – I review every book – and from here you will find many books that come with free audible narration. The narration was excellent – my favorite female and male narrators.

⭐The continuation of Lex’s story in beautiful Atlanta. Wonderfully written and imaginatively presented. Not recommended for children or anyone who would be disturbed by spirits.

⭐Boundary Haunted (Boundary Magic Book 5)Review from Jeannie Zelos book reviewsGenre: Sci-fi and fantasy I love all Melisa’s stories about the Old World, and this one continues to engage my attention as much as the rest. Sometimes when a series continues a while the stories feel faded, same-ish but not with these. The Scarlett Bernard books follow the same lines as the Boundary ones, same Old World but different city, different issues. That means there’s always something new to bring to the story, and I love both series. I’ve recently done a reread of them all, so events were fairly fresh in my mind from the last book. This time Lex has to travel to the South, where her talents have been requested. Maven says she doesn’t need to go, its outside the remit of their agreement, but she would like Lex to go, and hopefully persuade Beau, the Cardinal Vampire there, to join the parliament she is hoping to form. She needs strong allies like him, and Lex can see the value of helping him. She’s struggling though after the events of last time, not sleeping well, and hiding it from everyone as best she can. She’s worried about going back into a world that’s stuffed to the gills with Ghosts from the wars. The first meeting doesn’t go well, dangers soon appear, and Lex has no allies except for a spy of Mavens who can’t be revealed of course. Quinn wanted to come, he and Lex usually work together, but its too close to his human life, where his wife ( widow) and daughter still live. The temptation to seek them out, or the possibility of accidentally meeting them, would be too much. He hates seeing Lex in danger though and boy, does she get into some here….The story unfolds, opinions change, and the dangers stack up. Lex doesn’t really know where to look but slowly she starts to get a picture of events, although the culprit shocked her – and me. I Did Not see that coming!! I love to be caught out like that.As usual there’s a mix of info we know and new things, new spells, types of witchcraft, types of ghost, and the world Lex is in seems to be ever expanding. I enjoyed meeting new characters, wasn’t sure about Beau at first, but came to really like and respect him in the end. Even though its mostly new folk we meet, we still are connected to the usual crew by way of Lex’ thoughts, talks with Sam, phone calls and other little means, so it all felt very much a part of the series, not just Lex in a new tale. I like that connection, like the the world is slowly expanding, bringing in more folk – and hopefully lots more stories!Things happen here that throw light on some past events, and push the whole group further forward. If I’ve a criticism its just a personal one, I adore Quinn, I missed him, although I understood exactly why he had to stay away. Without him though Lex really will struggle.I look forward to the next from Melissa.Stars: Five, another cracking read. Roll on the next one.Self purchase

⭐Another Lex installment! As always, Mellisa creates a world filled with characters you can connect too, and as this is book 5, over the years the story has built we have got to know and understand our protagonists. If you haven’t read any olde world novels before, go look for boundary born and get started! An excellent urban fantasy novel, with a strong female lead who doesn’t suddenly crumble out of character needing a man to rescue her. You still get vampires, witches and werewolves, along with a good story line, well researched settings, and as always, excellent plot twists. For long time readers, the insights in to lead characters from other story arcs is a treat, but if you haven’t yet met them the references don’t impact your enjowmt of the story. As always, I’d recommend you buy it and enjoy!

⭐I have loved this series of books. If you are unfamiliar about the series this is the 5th and final (boo) book about Alison ‘Lex’ Luthor, a former marine who has ptsd and is also a boundary witch, what that means is that Lex can open doors for the dead and can in some cases bring them back to life.Lex works for Maven, head Vampire of Colorado and she is asked for favour by another Vampire. Lex is sent to Atlanta to help Beau the Vampire whose ghosts have gone missing.Lex is tasked to find where the ghosts have gone and help Beau get them back.I loved this story, i read it straight away, just a side note this cannot be the last book in this series, i hope that the publisher changes their mind, but if the author decides to self publish i will continue to buy them.

⭐If you have already stepped into the Old World with Me Olson’s works, you will not be disappointed with this latest volume. The attention to detail is first class as always, the sensitivity with which Civil War matters are dealt is perfect, particularly dealing with the South. If you haven’t read any Old World books so far and are curious, take that leap of faith! You will be rewarded with a great story in this particular book, and it may well open a door to a cornucopia of well written, exciting and ‘something a little different’ books with sympathetic characters, particularly the kick-ass heroines Melissa writes so well.

⭐I received an advance copy of this book as I am one of Melissa’s patron’s on Patreon. From that you may infer that I adore all of Melissa’s books, and this fully one met my expectations.I particularly like the way each book builds on the previous ones, but has its own unique story line. In this case, it’s that Lex is metaphorically haunted by her torture-by-ghosts in the previous book. Also, I completely failed to spot the baddie in this case, and they aren’t a return visit of a previous baddie this time round – no that that is a bad thing! As always, the characters – including the new ones – are well developed and believable in the context of the story’s background.Strongly recommended
