User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐Very thorough explanationsExplanations correct well to the exercises.Exercises are very challenging and good practice.
⭐Arnold’s Latin Prose Composition is a classic, and it is wonderful to have it in print form. However, the book arrived with one of the signatures out of order, resulting in wrong pagination for the glossary. If you purchase this version of the book, be sure to inspect it carefully upon receipt. The bookseller was unwilling to replace the book because by the time I discovered the error, it was outside of Amazon’s 30 day return window. I purchase at least one book per week from a variety of sellers (not just through Amazon), and this is the first time I’ve ever had a bookseller unwilling to stand behind his product by an appeal to the technicality of the return policy.
⭐No sample /answer translations for the English to Latin translation questions at the end of each “exercise” (Chapter).
⭐Perfect for English-to-Latin translation work. I definitely wouldn’t have made it through my final semester of undergrad school without this book. Recommended for anyone translating from English to Latin or even vice versa. A very good book for anyone intensively studying Latin.
⭐Thank goodness for products such as this one! I am excited to make more purchases later on from this particular market place!
⭐Thank you
⭐Good stuff!
⭐A 19th Century RelicThis book was originally written in the middle of the 19th century. If you read an English translation of Caesar’s “Bello Gallico” from that time, it will be clumsy. This book needs many parts translated into Modern English. It uses so many out of use words like ‘wither’ and ‘thither’. Many grammatical explanations are bad, the examples for the explanations worse and some of the exercises even worse. It is unfortunate that George Bradley didn’t complete rewrite 25% of this book. The text uses a flowing style of English translation. If you gave many of the examples of this text to Latin teachers around the world, you would dozens of different translations from just one sentence. Many of the translations from Latin to English are massively vague and overly creative. They border on creative fiction when the reader is given no context.Further, what is sense in translation from English to Latin? Who will read it? Who cares. Unfortunately, it is translating from Latin to English that counts.I wouldn’t want to be the teacher who has to grade the exercises from this book. That would be another disaster. If you are stuck with this book at your university, hope that you have an excellent teacher. If you are looking for an advanced grammar text, keep looking.
⭐Sir James Mountford, having re-edited “Bradley’s Arnold” without leaving his own name to it, also brought “Kennedy’s Revised Latin Primer” up to date. It is perhaps a pity that he did not leave a textbook under his own name, because generations of schoolchildren have much to thank, or blame, him for.I can do no better than echo the sentiment of a previous reviewer who called [Mountford’s] Bradley’s Arnold the “industry standard” for Latin prose composition. It is. As a text-book, as a grammar guide, as a manual of style, it is excellent, if uncompromising. Just as a British driving instructor teaches his or her student to drive with his or her hands at “ten to two” on the wheel, so does [Mountford’s] Bradley’s Arnold seek to develop a precise, correct, prosaic style in its readers. Heaven knows what Sir James would have made of John Traupman, the Ephemeris news website, or even his contemporary acrosss the pond, Avellanus; or, indeed, any proponent of “living Latin.” But, with that slight prick of Mountford’s pomposity, there is nothing wrong with learning to write according to a style before going on to develop one’s own, and Mountford’s grasp of the language is impressive and concisely communicated, with reference to the authorities any reader would expect. The exercises, however, are difficult; more difficult than the equivalents in North and Hilliard. As such, I have taken to attempting North and Hilliard first, to “teach,” then moving onto the corresponding section in [Mountford’s] Bradley’s Arnold, to “improve.” Others may wish to adopt a similar approach.I turn now to the text. As with many BCP reproductions, the quality of the facsimile is not particularly great. The text is legible, but it sometimes takes a squint to read. Perhaps most frustratingly, BCP has not published the corresponding answer key to this volume; Cambridge University Press has published an older version, but student Latinists will have to hunt online for the most up to date version. For all Mountford’s uncompromising, early 20th century pomposity; for the flaws in the appearance of the text; for the lack of a ready answer key, this is still an essential volume for the Latin student. Background to the Review:By way of background: I am now in my late 30s, hurtling towards 40. As my new year’s resolution in 2018, I resolved to improve my Latin to the level at which it had been when I was 18, before I went to University. I studied Latin between the ages of 11 and 18, up to and including A-Level (the academic pre-University exams in England and Wales). After a couple of months of relentlessly drilling noun, pronoun, adjective and verb endings, recommitting “hic, haec, hoc” and the imperfect subjunctive to memory, I started casting around for things to read. I knew I wasn’t ready for an Oxford Classical Text, but happily, there are far more accessible Latin textbooks, far more readily available than there were in 1998. These reviews deal with what I discovered, and what I thought of it.
⭐Book arrived in excellent condition and in good time. Useful for revision of Latin Syntax and translating English exercises into Latin. Wish the answers were there too though!
⭐Absolutely essentially for any student of the classics who wants to go from writing Latin prose to writing excellent Latin prose.
