Description

This is a saga of a peaceful pursuit by Buddhist scholars from Kashmir and Kabul to propagate the message of the Buddha. The present study is not one of Buddhism in isolation. It equally provides an account of the political forces confronting each other during the course of history of this region between the Tien-Shan and the Kunlum ranges for well over a thousand years. It depicts all the factors and forces responsible for Buddhism introduction, prosperity and eventual decay and decline. However, it is a comprehensive study of Buddhism in Central Asia.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This is a tragically overlooked and undervalued book. The author B.N. Puri is a Indian scholar that specializes in Buddhist and Indian Studies and his knowledge shines throughout the entire book. Central Asian Buddhism is a topic in which there exists very few resources and is a area of study that is neglected even by academics. That is why I cannot stress how unique, comprehensive, and invaulable this book is. This book in question covers not just the history of Central Asian Buddhism but also its literature, culture, art, philosophy, legacy, and biographies of important Buddhist figures. Other priceless features include stunning photos and extensive footnotes. The areas the book covers are the what is now known as Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Xinjiang in China, Tibet and Mongolia. I literally cannot comprehend why this book is so ignored even in books dealing with the Silk Road and religion.Even with that said there are a few problems this book has. The bibliography is poor and contains few actual modern works. The works that are mentioned are inaccessible to most and vary in quality. This makes some of the assertions and supposed facts hard to verify and worst of all, prevents readers from further study into this facinating facet of Buddhism. The other problem has to do with the quality of the book itself not the contents. A unfortunate thing about the publisher, Motilal Banarsidass, is that while they make good scholarly works, the quality of the paper, ink, and print tend to be on the cheap side. This book is no exception. The ink is so bad at times that a few words are almost faded out. The print is small and the paper can easily get damaged. But please, these negatives are only a slight burden in comparison to the the utter uniqueness and extensive information this book contains. It it the only book on the subject and it deserves to be a standard text on the topic.
