Review ‘The thriller maestro of the generation’ – Manchester Evening News
Reviews from Amazon users, collected at the time the book is getting published on UniedVRG. It can be related to shiping or paper quality instead of the book content:
⭐ The book’s theme was astounding, the plot outsanding and story brilliantly written in typical James Hadley Chase’s fashion.James keeps you guessing throughout the novel. The story has several twists and turns and is spell-bound. Cade’s vulnurability to Juana Roca is mind buggling in that it nearly cost him his life and in that it limited his interest in other women kept him from pursing other seemingly safer relationships though he (Cade) was a sucker for beautiful women. The efforts through the snow-filled patch that led to capturing the picture scene (photograph) of the Russian model/movie star, Anita Strelik, along with General Hardenburg, Head of East German Secret Police, Herman Lieven and Boris Duslowski, one time Stalin’s Chief of Police on the terrace at the Chateau from a tree, and the subsequent pursuit by the Russian body guards was suspenseful.A must read.
⭐ Breath taking suspense right to the last page. Couldn’t put the book down once I started. James Hadley Chase never fails to thrill. One of his best books yet.
⭐ Excellent book esp for one written many many moons ago. i intend to catch up on all James Hardly Chase books.
⭐ One of the best from J. H. ChaseCADE, 1966Here is a story of an alcoholic press photographer, set against the torrid background of Mexico, the glittering lights of New York and the snow-covered mountains of Switzerland. He finished his drink, then picked up his Minolta, he walked over the bridge to reach the far side of the pool and made his way with easy strides to the public beach.Without knowing it, he was about to keep a fatal appointment with his destiny. It was on this hot sunny afternoon that he first met Juana Roca, a woman who was to ruin him to the wreck of a man who was later to be beaten nearly to death in a town called Eastonville.Extract :Cade stepped away from the balcony and lowered his camera. He was trembling, but he knew he had a set of pictures that would speak far louder than any pictures he might have taken of the freedom march. Now he wanted a drink. He mowed uneasily back into the room, then he stopped short, a cold surge of shock flowing up his spine. His eyes like wet stones, Mitchell stood in the open doorway. The two men stared at each other, then Mitchell mowed into the room, shut and locked the door.” Give me that camera, you sonofabitch, ” he said.See more at […]
⭐ I actually first read this novel over 30 years ago. I have just finished reading it again and I can certainly confirm it as a masterpiece by my standards.A scene that would take most Best Selling authors a page or two to paint takes James Hadley Chase just a few lines and you will get the picture crystal clear . The logic and psychology of the events and characters are both consistent and sound. It goes without saying that in this day and age, with all the various gadgets that compete for our leisure time, any writer that beats about the bush for too long will lose his audience. Well, Chase definitely can’t be accused of that. He grips you once he gets you!
⭐ This a story about an famous photographer who turns alcoholic due to a Mexican evil woman. Very interesting plot with lots of twists and a few shootings near the end. It reminds me of Chase’s “Eve” (one of his best novels) in that its more a “love thriller” than a “criminal thriller”. Amazing rare stuff.
⭐ Quality!
⭐ Received the books in super fast speed… Thank you …But printing and paper quality not upto the mark… Overall must make improvements on these classic Chase thrillers for the die-hard collectors !!
⭐ Très bonne qualité de ce roman. Il faut lire JHC en anglais, les traductions sont souvent mauvaises ou très médiocres
