She writes for Frommer’s and Wiley whenever she can, which is quite a bit (Frommer’s New Orleans, Frommer’s Las Vegas, Las Vegas For Dummies, Los Angeles For Dummies, and more!) and she is so happy she can do it in the California sunshine. The rest of the time, Mary works for the film industry, which is a very California thing to do. Paula Tevis, also a second-generation Californian, was born and raised in Santa Barbara, attended college in Los Angeles, and then moved to her favorite city, where she could cheer for the San Francisco Giants in peace. After an eclectic but blessedly brief career that included stints in the computer and nonprofit sectors, she and her California-bred husband produced a couple of lovely children, and Paula happily relinquished the 9-to-5 world for the 24/7 one that parenting brings. Upon regaining consciousness, she metamorphosed into a freelance writer, and over the years has contributed articles and essays to Parenting and Family Fun magazines, the San Francisco Chronicle, Citysearch.com, Frommer’s Las Vegas, and Frommer’s New Orleans. She is the author of San Francisco For Dummies, the Berlitz Vancouver Pocketguide, and Frommer’s San Francisco with Kids. Paula currently lives with her husband and their daughters in London, but reads the Chronicle online daily.

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐This book gives a list of hotels and restaurants and tips related to weather and means of transport. It was outdated in regard to prices & some addresses. Also it had a list of attractions but not enough details. Also it misses some of the nicer areas to visit. however if you want a basic idea about where to go, it emphasizes the best attractions. Note that it includes no pictures, also very bulky to carry around

⭐thank`s a lot for the fast delivery to Germany. The product was in the describes shape. In Germany we write “AAA” or “gerne wieder” what means, that I would buy something from you every time.

⭐Very helpful

⭐I purchased this book and read it cover to cover before my recent trip to California. I can’t express enough how helpful it was. Everything just made sense. I felt like I knew a lot about the state before I even went there and when I was there it all clicked. We even tried a couple of hotel recommendations with great success. (The Fogcatcher Inn in Cambria, near Hearst Castle was wonderful). This book is for someone planning to VACATION in California. The places that are not tourist worthy are not mentioned and they tell you that from the get go. Trust me, the vacation destinations are all here and written about in great easy to read detail. You will be glad you bought this book before your trip.

⭐This book was a major disappointment for our trip. Consider the following typical omissions. San Jose is the 10th largest city in the entire country, and this book does NOT list a single hotel, restaurant, or attraction in the entire city. Stanford University and the town of Palo Alto similarly do not merit a single word in this book (although lots of silly tourist traps get multiple pages). Even when a town is covered, major hotels and attractions are missing. In my opinion, this book appeared to contain only “cut and paste” filler that one could get randomly from Internet sites.

⭐I found this book very beneficial on my recent trip to California. There were some great suggestions on off the path excursions that I would not have experienced had I not read about them in this book.
