Description
Teary, big-eyed orphans and a multitude of trashy knockoffs epitomized American kitsch art as they clogged thrift stores for decades. When Adam Parfrey tracked down Walter Keane—the credited artist of the weepy waifs, for a San Diego Reader cover story in 1992—he discovered some shocking facts. Decades of lawsuits and countersuits revealed the reality that Keane was more of a con man than an artist, and that he forced his wife Margaret to sign his name to her own paintings. As a result, those weepy waifs may not have been as capricious an invention as they seemed.Parfrey’s story was reprinted in Juxtapoz magazine and inspired a Margaret Keane exhibition at the Laguna Art Museum. And now director Tim Burton is filming a movie about the Keanes called Big Eyes, and it’s scheduled for release in 2014. Burton’s Ed Wood, starring Johnny Depp, was based upon the Feral House book edited and published by Parfrey about the angora sweater-wearing B-film director.Citizen Keane is a book-length expansion of Parfrey’s original article, providing fascinating biographical and sociological details, photographs, color reproductions, and appendices with legal documents and pseudonymous essays by Tom Wolfe inflating big eye art to those painted by the great masters.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐This book reads like a series of articles in a tabloid magazine. Yes, I purchased the book because I saw the movie and was interested in learning more details. While there are a few such details scattered among the pages of this book, a majority of it comprises guesses, innuendo, questions, and conjecture. I cannot say that I know more now than when I saw the movie because almost everything in the book is couched with questions about veracity, or backed up by other writers’ stories, or even worse by long passages of Keane’s own “autobiography.” Frankly, it reminds of Donald Trump truthiness: it may be true because they’re hearing things and reading things that others are saying so it might be true, but I don’t know, maybe.
⭐This is a great book. It teaches teenagers and young adults a lesson. You don’t have to allow your spouse or significant other to get credit for things you did yourself. Own your own work. Own your own life. She should of told him way years earlier right after he mentioned to her about him getting credit for her work. I guess in some ways it was the signs of the times. But still… Hopefully we don’t have any men or women allowing this to happen in their lives today.
⭐I bought this book in response to watching the Tim Burton 2015 movie Big Eyes. Unfortunately this book is somewhat jumbled up, not done in a chronological order. Without knowing the story and/or having seen the movie, it’s hard to follow, because the author presents some of the lies in such a way that you really wonder if it’s true or just him telling it sarcastically. However, the many photos are great.I expected more of a storyline like the movie. But altogether, well written and eye-opening.
⭐I loved this book! It is fascinating, cruel, and redeaming! I thought about passing the book on to someone else but I think I will hold onto it because I enjoyed it so much. I need time to digest and possibly reread it over.Very well written and shares both sides with information that pretty much lets Walter explain his side in a way that makes you realize how twisted he is. Makes no bones about it! And Margaret is so calm and in due time redeams herself. BRAVO!
⭐Boring. Quotes the supposedly erroneous info from the husband’s book for about 50-60% of this book. Doesn’t add anything really insightful to this account between these two artists. I lived in San Francisco during that time, but the author obviously didn’t as he could not capture the flavor of the Bay Area back then. I really didn’t come away from this book with any new knowledge or actually caring about either of the people involved.
⭐I bought this book because I saw the movie and hoped this book would provide more details, insight and background that was not in the movie. This was disappointing. It basically repeated what was in the movie and relied on press reports and Mr. Keane’s book for its material. This book had some interesting photos of the artists and their works of art–but aside from that it was a waste of time and money. The movie was well done and interesting, if anyone has an interest in this topic they should spend the money to see the movie, not buy the book.
⭐Finally the true story. Now I know why things were hush-hush and why the fear of not leaving your spouse – basically the way the law was written. Movie added the final touch. I only wished that when the movie came out, the story was more clear. Few people know of “Big Eyes” but they should know some of the photos. I waited long time for the full story.
⭐The give and take between Margaret vs Walter along with an equally distant love/hate, art vs commercialism, begs the reader to hang on for the ride through an era of tumultuous times for all. A must read!
⭐Great story.
⭐Good read. Enjoyed reading.
