Description

This text advances from the basic laws of electricity and magnetism to classical electromagnetism in a quantum world. Suitable for first-year graduate students in physics who have taken an undergraduate course in electromagnetism, it focuses on core concepts and related aspects of math and physics. Progressing from the basic laws of electricity and magnetism and their unification by Maxwell and Einstein, the treatment culminates in a survey of the role of classical electromagnetism in a quantum world. Each stage of the theory is carefully developed in a clear and systematic approach that integrates mathematics and physics so that readers are introduced to the theory and learn the mathematical skills in context of real physics applications. Topics include methods of solution in electrostatics, Green’s functions, electrostatics in matter, magnetism and ferromagnetism, electromagnetic waves in matter, special relativity, and the electrodynamics of moving bodies. Newly revised by author Jerrold Franklin, the book includes the new section Answers to Odd-Numbered Problems.

⭐For context: I am in the first year of my PhD in Physics currently taking a graduate Electromagnetism course at the level of Jackson. It’s a physics book that teaches physics, and presents the mathematics simultaneously with the physics as needed by the nature of the content. Begins on the topics from a fundamental point of view and builds up with (in my opinion) no loss in rigor. Also a nice writing style that reminds me of the approachable tone of Griffiths QM/EM intro books. This may be the greatest book I have ever bought. Brought me back from the dead.Note on CGS units: The author chooses CGS units, to put it concisely, in order to not cloud the physics with unnecessary meaningless constants.i.e. in SI units k = 1/4(pi)epsilon(0) in CGS k =1

⭐This is an outstanding textbook, and a really good little read for those looking to refresh the memory. The consistency of presentation as well as the constant touch stones with modern physics really integrates this presentation well into a physics curriculum. The only reservation I have with it is the use of CGS units. While this is fine for a graduate course, I had wanted to use the text as an advanced undergrad course and it is usually a little better to stick to MKS for such purposes (It helps with GREs etc.). But it is certainly on my supplemental reading list for them.

⭐Cover most fundamental topics of electromagnetism
