⭐ This one has a bit of everything, from political shenanigans to spy stuff to military action. And along the way, Ryan finally meets John Clark. It’s also a heck of a lot better than the movie.I know a lot of folk don’t like Clancy’s attention to detail. I do, having been in the military, and having been a geek for so long that the word wasn’t used when I started.I also like his books because many of his characters are intelligent, honest, and ethical people. I find that refreshing, since these attributes are no longer “in fashion”, much to the detriment of our society.

⭐ What makes Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan novels so special, is that they are not simply just action spy thrillers with espionage, explosions, etc. They feel more realistic, like as if the issues raised in the books were ripped straight out of a newspaper headline, and ‘Clear and Present Danger’ is no exception, as it raises the issues of U.S. American Policy; the War on Drugs; the abuse of political and military power by a government bureaucracy with no accountability; etc., and was even written with relevance to not just the War on Drugs but also the Iran–Contra Affair during Reagan’s Presidency in the 1980’s. But even then, the book’s sociopolitical issues still feels relevant today, even in this post–Trump era.But anybody who is a Jack Ryan fan, or a general fan of political thrillers, ‘Clear and Present Danger’ is worth the read, and oughta be read alongside watching the movie, as well.SPOILER ALERT:Unlike in the movie where Jack Ryan is more of a main central character, in the book, he is more of a secondary character who becomes important by the second–half. And the film’s ending did leave me feeling somewhat a bit frustrated, but calmed down after reading the book’s ending.

⭐ Firstly I really Did enjoy this Book. It was well written and very tougher with the back round details.My issue was it was over 1000 pages in length!! By far the most Longest that I have Ever read in my life.It seem to have almost toooo much detail in parts. A lot of Padding could have been taken to reduce the length. The Coast Guard section could have been reduced by 200++ pages without effecting the Book.I do recommend this book as long as you realize it’s length.

⭐ I always thought of this as Tom Clancy’s first post-Cold War book but in fact it was published in 1989 and has several references to the Soviet Union. But, of course, the focus of the book is on the drug war rather than Russia.Even if you have seen the movies starring Harrison Ford many times, you will not be bored by this book. The plot is different in many respects.The book takes you back to the world of the 1980’s. The drug war is described as if it is still a relatively novel thing and Clancy employs dated sounding terminology such as repeated references to “the druggies.”There are about 250 pages in the later half where the plot seemed to me to stall a bit. But keep reading through to the end. To me, this book was not quite as good as Cardinal of the Kremlin but better than all the preceding Jack Ryan books.

⭐ I’ll add my vote to those who said the plot is too complex and there are far too many characters. I don’t mean to say the plot isn’t good, it is quite good, but there are way too many unnecessary details that will only be appreciated by current or former military/CIA/FBI folks, and new characters are being introduced almost to the very end. I almost gave up on it about 75% of the way through, but the plot had enough twists that I forged on just to see how it ended. Jack Ryan was introduced very late in the story and had an important, but minimal, role.

⭐ If you’ve seen the movie, you have to read the story! If you haven’t seen the movie, then read the book first. Both are great. The characters are so real life, you will feel like they’re friends. I have always enjoyed Tom Clancy movies, but the books are still better!

⭐ There’s a lot going on in this novel and I am glad that I was finally able to add it to my audio library collection. I have listened through it a few times already. I always seem to hear some detail that I didn’t catch the first time. The characters are familiar from the earlier Clancy books, but they remain engaging and the author continues to build nuances into them. There is a lot going on throughout the story that keeps the listener/reader engaged and focused.

⭐ And like most hard jobs, very rewarding when completed. The technical information is quite thorough, a bit too much so for me personally. However, the plots and characters kept me turning the pages. I just might be able to fly a helicopter after learning so much! One complaint: so many of the names were so similar I had to reread often. Chavez. Cortez. Clark. Etc

⭐ The Clancy never never fail to make me loose sleep due to how hooked I am. I am currently going through the series and it appears that so far that his novels tend to be consistently suspenseful on the second half with enough excitement in the first half to keep you reading. I would recommend this whole series to anyone that enjoys spy shows and novels. Though fiction, these stories seem to be deeply routed in realism.

⭐ This is quintessential Clancy with multiple gears turning in this masterpiece. You can still enjoy it even if you haven’t read the series. The characters are well developed and the plot is complicated enough that it keeps you guessing al the way to the end.
