Description

From one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century, the author of The Metamorphosis and The Trial—a collection of stories that represent the art of a modern master who had the gift of making our problematic spiritual life palpable and real. Franz Kafka’s imagination so far outstripped the forms and conventions of the literary tradition he inherited that he was forced to turn that tradition inside out in order to tell his splendid, mysterious tales that are scrupulously naturalistic on the surface and uncanny in their depths. This edition of his stories includes all his available shorter fiction in a collection edited, arranged, and introduced by Gabriel Josipovici in ways that bring out the writer’s extraordinary range and intensity of vision.Everyman’s Library pursues the highest production standards, printing on acid-free cream-colored paper, with full-cloth cases with two-color foil stamping, decorative endpapers, silk ribbon markers, European-style half-round spines, and a full-color illustrated jacket. Contemporary Classics include an introduction, a select bibliography, and a chronology of the author’s life and times.

User’s Reviews

Editorial Reviews: Review “Because he gives us food we need, Kafka himself will not be forgotten as long as there are books to read and human beings to read them. He lives for us in his fragmentary and living [stories] more than he ever lived for himself in the bosom of his family, the Kafkas, and his city, Prague.” –from the Introduction by Gabriel Josipovici From the Inside Flap Introduction by Gabriel Josipovici, Translation by Willa and Edwin Muir From the Back Cover Introduction by Gabriel Josipovici, Translation by Willa and Edwin Muir About the Author FRANZ KAFKA was born in Prague in 1883 and died of tuberculosis in a sanatorium near Vienna in 1924. After earning a law degree in 1906, he worked for most of his adult life at the Worker’s Accident Insurance Institute in Prague. Only a small portion of Kafka’s writings were published during his lifetime. He left instructions for his friend and literary executor Max Brod to destroy all of his unpublished work after his death, instructions Brod famously ignored. Read more

Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:

⭐I got this book because I really enjoyed The metamorphosis the writing on it was superb! You couldn’t but feel sadness and empathy for poor Gregor Samsa! The abuses and the cruelty he went through all at the hands of his very own family!!! So I decided to buy this collection of Franz Kafka. The book itself it’s beautiful as seen from the pictures.

⭐This is a great collection. After my young readings of Kafka, I can know simply enjoy him. There will never be another.

⭐If you like Kafka then you’ll like this. The Trial is his best, in my opinion. Unfortunately it’s not in this collection. Metamorphosis is in this collection, probably his second best known work. A bit thin, in my opinion until you realize when it was written, then you appreciate it more.

⭐Inspired Robert Smith lyrics for a few Cure songs

⭐I chose the rating because this COLLECTED STORIES is one I have never owned before. So, now I can lose myself in revisiting all that delicious creativity. I lost a treasured edition with fewer stories years ago. I like Kafka’s observations regarding his own writing and how he thinks about it. The ELEVEN SONS is a good example . The book exceeded my expectation and every day as I sit down to read, I am more delighted with it. Fran Jansen

⭐Book came in great shape and on time. I’m not a fan of kafka, had to buy it for school. Product was great, though!

⭐This is a fine book to have on your shelf. Looks great, feels great, and of course, Franz Kafka’s work is brilliant and stimulating.h

⭐One of the finest collections of short stories & parables, many with paradoxical, existential themes, in world literature. Many of these Kafka stories are so good, notwithstanding occasional complexity, that they may be reread many times over. Despite some dark, disturbing settings, many are also laced with absurdist humour. Yet others move one deeply. This edition is fairly complete, comprising 87 Kafka stories. Translations are by Kafka’s original English translators, Willa & Edwin Muir. Though their rendering is highly renowned, newer critically acclaimed English translations also exist in other editions. How fitting then that Everyman’s Library produces such splendid hardcover books, with quality Smyth-sewn binding & on acid-free paper that will endure for generations. No hesitations in giving this volume 5 stars. I’d also recommend Kafka’s excellent novels, “The Trial” & “The Castle” by the same publisher.PS: Now if only Everyman’s Library would also publish Kafka’s 3rd novel, “America”, Kafka’s outstanding, soul-searching “Diaries” & his volumes of insightful letters, my wishes of one day owning all the work of this extraordinary writer in uniform quality hardcover would be fulfilled.

⭐The Everyman’s Library Classics Edition books are, in my opinion, the best quality books available in the price-range. They are quality bound, with acid-free paper, dust jacket, and ribbon page marker. There are also a great range of authors available in this collection, and they are very reasonably priced.

⭐Very good

⭐This is a book for questioning minds.

⭐I tried to read fully. Only some of the stories were of merit (as per my personal taste of prose). But yes, at least in life, you must read them. So, Its a must buy. ✨
