Description
The blockbuster bestseller that kickstarted a new genre–the medical thriller–is now available in trade paperback for the first time.
They called it “minor surgery,” but Nancy Greenly, Sean Berman and a dozen others–all admitted to Boston Memorial Hospital for routine procedures–were victims of the same inexplicable, hideous tragedy on the operating table. They never woke up.
Susan Wheeler is a third-year medical student working as a trainee at Boston Memorial Hospital. Two patients during her residency mysteriously go into comas immediately after their operations due to complications from anesthesia. Susan begins to investigate the causes behind both of these alarming comas and discovers the oxygen line in Operating Room 8 has been tampered with to induce carbon monoxide poisoning.
Then Susan discovers the evil nature of the Jefferson Institute, an intensive care facility where patients are suspended from the ceiling and kept alive until they can be harvested for healthy organs. Is she a participant in–or a victim of–a large-scale black market dealing in human organs?

Reviews from Amazon users, collected at the time the book is getting published on UniedVRG. It can be related to shiping or paper quality instead of the book content:
⭐ This book starts out slow, but ramps up to full of action before too long. About two-thirds of the way through I started wondering about one character. About a chapter before all was revealed, I was sure that character was the bad guy. I found the main character to be pretty annoying. I just didn’t care for or about her about half the time. It’s quite interesting, though, that Coma was published before I was born and yet the story still stands as something that could happen or be happening. The only dated part is the extreme attitudes toward female medical students and doctors. And, of course, the lack of cell phones. Otherwise, it’s easy to forget the book was written almost 45 years ago. I recommend it to anyone who enjoys medical thrillers.
⭐ Casual readers, beware! This book can get incredibly technical, so be prepared. That said, I LOVED this book! Medicine is a fascinating field full of moral and ethical quandaries, and Coma manages to discuss most of them. The pacing is great; the stakes keep getting higher and higher until you come to the final reveal. Susan is a wonderful narrator, though she does come off as unbelievably stubborn sometimes. Bottom line: read this book!
⭐ This is an old book but my grand daughter wanted to read it so I got it to keep up with her lol.I found it slow moving, my stepson told me it will pick up but it didn’t pick up the pace enough for me.I can usually figure out where the story is going but I didn’t with this one, which is why I kept reading. It is well written and I am a big fan of Robin Cook I just don’t know why it took so long for me to read this one.
⭐ Coma, one of Robin Cook’s earlier bestselling novels, opens with Nancy Greenly going to Memorial Hospital for a routine D&C. Something goes wrong, probably with the anesthesia procedure, and she never wakes up. Susan Wheeler, a 3rd year medical student is starting her surgery rotations with other students, but is very upset at what happens to Nancy. Then she helps prepare Sean Berman for minor knee surgery, talks with him before he’s wheeled in, and accepts a date which will be scheduled after his recovery. There are complications, again in anesthesia, and he never wakes up. Susan begins to look into the statistics of these happenings at Memorial Hospital, and her “meddling” starts causing problems, not only with her, but also with her mentor, Mark Bellows, and others in the hospital. She is a determined woman and pushes her investigation. As she begins her investigation she goes places that are unauthorized. She obtains computer printouts with confidential information. Susan seeks for help but continues to get warned but that does not stop her determination but little does she know her own life is at risk. This book is a great read hard but great the medical terms are hard to understand with little to none knowing about them but always fun to research. This book is very up paced and interesting one, of the best reads I’ve had in a while, very detailed with characters and surroundings.
⭐ It is clear that this is written by someone and for folks with good medical knowledge and the author doesn’t try much if at all to explain it. I am a bit familiar with some of it so that helps.Susan is a gutsy young medical student and for some of that, I applaud her. It’s her total disregard for higher-ups that has me appalled. It’s less than believable that a real-life student would have lasted even the first few hours in training with that disrespect. The second half of the book is where the adrenaline pumping action occurs. However again, one has to suspend believability in some of the feats that take place. The further along in this book I read, the more it is evident the author has more experience as a physician than as a writer.
⭐ This was reread of medical thriller I read back the 70’s and still holds up and keeps you at the edge of your seat. The condition of this awesome paperback was good
⭐ The book was set in the 70’s and of course some of the scenarios may feel dated. But the plot of the book is still relevant today. The first half of the book was rather slow. The second half moved at a better pace. Development of characters was a bit weak; and I didn’t enjoy the stereotype against female doctors in the book. I understand the book was probably describing a reality in the 70’s, I still feel sorry for female doctors back then.
⭐ I haven’t read Coma since it was originally published. I couldn’t put it down then and nothing has changed since. It was funny to have to remind myself of what the technology and medicines, etc. were back then, but it made the story more challenging.
⭐ I saw Coma years I had time to read. Or perhaps before I took time read. Robin Cook is my favorite authors. I love medicine and I love mystery. I think I’ve read every one of his books.
⭐ Love this novel! Read it years ago and bought this copy for my personal library of medical thrillers.
