Description

Robin Cook has always been on the cutting edge of the latest medical controversies. In Acceptable Risk, he confronts one of the most provocative issues of our time: personality-altering drugs and the complex moral questions they raise. Neuroscientist Edward Armstrong has managed to isolate a psychotropic drug with a strange and dark history–one that may account for the public hysteria during the Salem witch trials. In a brilliant designer-drug transformation, it is developed into an antidepressant with truly startling therapeutic capabilities. But who can be sure the drug is safe for consumers? Who defines the boundaries of “normal” human behavior? And if the drug’s side effects are proven to be dangerous–even terrifying–how far will the medical community go to alter their standards of…Acceptable Risk.

User’s Reviews

Review A research scientist discovers a mood-altering, enhancing drug and involves himself and other researchers in a deadly experiment. Blended with this story of greed and laboratories gone awry is a woman’s relationship troubles and her increasingly troubled conviction that something has gone wrong. The tension and sound effects are superb in audio format. — Midwest Book Review –This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

⭐ If anyone has ever been to Salem,Massachusetts and visited the Witch House and seen all the items for sale by self proclaimed witches, it can be a daunting adventure. The addition of a “new drug” taken from dirt with rye wheat spores at the site is scary to say the least. Anyone who has red the stories of ergot , that came from rye wheat mold into bread was the fault, Its a tale our beloved author has regenerated to tell us a most fascinating tale with all the spooks at work with a new drug. What a great book to read at night while tucked in for the night. This is one of Dr. Cook’s tomes that will become a favorite.

⭐ Slow getting to the point, but has an interesting back story. This is good reading before bed but did not meet my expectations of a good thriller. Having read many of Robin Cook`s books this one was a little bit of a let down.

⭐ This was my first Robin Cook novel, selected because of my interest in the Salem Witch Trials. Like many other novelists of his type – those with a specialized knowledge in a particular field – Cook writes with a command of his subject but not with a command of fiction writing. His characters are unrealistic and mostly annoying, his prose is flat and repetitive and his dialogue is amateurish…at least in this novel. I wasn’t expecting Hemingway but Cook falls short of most of his dime novel contemporaries like King, Crichton, Grisham and Connelly.Nevertheless, it’s an easy weekend read, with occasional scenes that generate a bit of suspense. The rye/ergot theory has been mostly debunked as a cause of the Salem episode but Cook’s medical knowledge adds a bit of weight to the case.As of this writing, a group of New York teenagers are being examined for symptoms that are not unlike those of the Salem “possessed”. How that case plays out could offer some fascinating insight into what might have caused the events of 1692.And maybe it will inspire a far better novel than “Acceptable Risk”.

⭐ Another thriller from a masterful author. I love medical thrillers and this one doesn’t disappoint. Love how the author uses his medical expertise to write heart pounding stories.

⭐ I read this book years ago, (Robin Cook actually signed it for me!). I lent it to someone and never got it back. It was so good I thought my daughter would enjoy it and I read it again. Very interesting book!

⭐ I enjoy Robin Cook for the fast reading style as well as the real life subjects he writes about. Once I turn the first page it is hard to put the book down. Sometimes the stories are a little far out but they are always entertaining.

⭐ Fascinating. Different. Very different than other books. Really liked the story and was surprised by the ending.Don’t know what else to say.

⭐ Loved the book!

⭐ Typical Robin Cook EXCELLENCE.

⭐ a swirl of medical and historical adventures
