Description
Verilog Hardware Description Language (HDL) is the state-of-the-art method for designing digital and computer systems. Ideally suited to describe both combinational and clocked sequential arithmetic circuits, Verilog facilitates a clear relationship between the language syntax and the physical hardware. It provides a very easy-to-learn and practical means to model a digital system at many levels of abstraction. Computer Arithmetic and Verilog HDL Fundamentals details the steps needed to master computer arithmetic for fixed-point, decimal, and floating-point number representations for all primary operations. Silvaco International’s SILOS, the Verilog simulator used in these pages, is simple to understand, yet powerful enough for any application. It encourages users to quickly prototype and de-bug any logic function and enables single-stepping through the Verilog source code. It also presents drag-and-drop abilities.Introducing the three main modeling methods—dataflow, behavioral, and structural—this self-contained tutorial—Covers the number systems of different radices, such as octal, decimal, hexadecimal, and binary-coded variationsReviews logic design fundamentals, including Boolean algebra and minimization techniques for switching functionsPresents basic methods for fixed-point addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division, including the use of decimals in all four operationsAddresses floating-point addition and subtraction with several numerical examples and flowcharts that graphically illustrate steps required for true addition and subtraction for floating-point operandsDemonstrates floating-point division, including the generation of a zero-biased exponentDesigned for electrical and computer engineers and computer scientists, this book leaves nothing unfinished, carrying design examples through to completion. The goal is practical proficiency. To this end, each chapter includes problems of varying complexity to be designed by the reader.
User’s Reviews
Reviews from Amazon users which were colected at the time this book was published on the website:
⭐I have changed my review. While this book needs work on better explanation of figures and tables, it still offers descriptions of arithmetic algorithms and implementations which are way clear than other books.
⭐A copy of Joseph Cavanagh’s book on Digital Computer Arithmetic Design and Implementation lives next to the Sun workstation in my home office. I keep it there as it remains a useful resource. This author provides texts that can be used as a tutorial as well as a reference serving the new learner as well as the practicing designer. This book provides an update to the content found in the original work prefacing the computer arithmetic therein with number systems, logic design principles and Verilog. This progression leads solidly into implementing the arithmetic designs. Problem sets go on to further prepare the engineering student. Written in a clean manner technical concepts are made clear and backed up by design examples. An overall thorough and detailed timeless resource recommended for both academia and industry.
⭐A great book to learn this popular HDL as it applies to arithmetic circuits. Grammatically polished with numerous examples, this book is ideal for the practicing engineer and students. The theory and detailed design of many different types of arithmetic circuits for fixed-point, decimal, and floating-point number representations and their implementation in Verilog is excellent. The examples clarify the mathematical theory of each method. The Verilog designs for various rounding methods, residue checking, and parity prediction are clearly implemented. Highly recommended.
⭐For so many 5-star reviews, I’m very surprised at the content of this book.Almost all of the sentences in this book are of the form:”Use keyword x to do blah””We now do this as shown in figure/table y. [No further explanation]””Example Z: blah blah [No theory before/after said example]”Lots of screenshots of software that is outdated by this point.I consider CRC Press to be a high quality publisher and I normally take their quality for granted when looking at books. I am very disappointed that a book of this low quality made it through the editors.
⭐Mr. Cavanaugh’s work is the stalwart of digital computer arithmetic since at least the 1980’s. I would have had a similar reaction to another review, had I read the first chapter and thrown up my hands, and quit reading. However, if you carefully read the book, you will be more than prepared to understand, in-depth, how digital computers compute. One really nice feature of this book is an in-depth look at Booth multipliers. I first read the book just after Intel released the 2920; Intel’s first DSP IC. I was totally engrossed in IC design at Signetics working on 80×51 derivatives and learning the PLA that is the sequence in the 8051 architecture. Mr. Cavanaugh’s original book, https://amazon.com/Digital-Computer-Arithmetic-Implementation-McGraw-Hill/dp/0070102821/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=digital+computer+arithmetic&qid=1623945126&sr=8-1, was a valuable resource. Since then, I have purchased every one of his books I could. So, if you think this book is lacking theory and/or explanations, you may find that Dr. Brock J. LaMeres’s “Introduction to Logic Circuits and Logic Design” book and YouTube videos are easier to understand. Dr. LaMere doe an excellent job teaching the subject, but he doesn’t dive as deep into the theory as Mr. Cavanaugh. Both authors (Cavanaugh and LaMere) are excellent reads; it all depends on your level of experience and needs.
