    Description

International Series of Monographs in Natural Philosophy, Volume 12: Current Algebras and their Applications provides an introduction to the underlying philosophy and to the technical methods associated with the use of the Current Algebra for the investigation of questions in elementary particle physics. This text contains 10 chapters and begins with the preliminary concepts and basic ideas of current algebras. The next chapters deal with the approximate symmetry and the dispersion theory of current algebras, as well as the current algebra sum rules with PCAC. These topics are followed by reviews of the principles of the low-energy theorems, the Schwinger terms, and the features of the dispersion theory. The last chapter examines the possible connections of current algebras and dynamics. This book will prove useful to mathematicians, physicists, teachers, and students.

⭐B. Renner: Current Algebras and Their Applications, Pergamon Press, is one of too many really good books from the golden age (1965 – 1990) of high energy physics. Others are, e.g., J. C. Taylor: Gauge theories of weak interactions, Cambridge; P. D. B. Collins: An introduction to Regge Theory and high energy physics, Cambridge; C. Itzykson & J.-B. Zuber: Quantum Field Theory, McGraw-Hill; R. Rajaraman: Solitons and Instantons, North-Holland; B. Kayser, F. Gibrat-Deby & F. Perrier: The Physics of Massive Neutrinos, World Scientific; R. G. Roberts: The structure of the proton, Cambridge. While current algebras are often said to be obsolete, as an approach to the weak and strong nuclear forces, given the so called standard model with gauge theories, the latter is still not a complete theory. If one wants to do complicated calculations, such as, e.g., neutron-proton or proton-antiproton mass differences or top quark condensation latent heat or neutrino mass, one must both go beyond the standard model and know all these particles well. With respect to the latter, current algebras are still worthwhile. The present book is not expensive.
